That was a little more than seven years ago.
Today, the Martinez resident was given the Triumph Award during Walton Rehabilitation Hospitals annual luncheon recognizing National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. The award recognizes a person each year who has overcome their disabling condition.
When Mr. Hensley arrived at Walton in 2002, he was completely dependent. Even after he recovered, he continues to be connected with Walton through volunteering and often speaks to community groups about traumatic brain injuries and about his choices that led to his accident.
Bryan is a tremendous example of an individual who turned his life around after a catastrophic injury and not only has become able to live independently again, but also is a representative of Walton at its finest, said Dennis Skelley, president and CEO of Walton Rehabilitation Health System. Through his own heart, hes compelled to take the message of good choices back to other teenagers so that they can avoid some of the tragedy and hardship that he went through with his injury and his recovery.
