Authorities recovered the ATM stolen from a local bank yesterday when a hiker stumbled across the machine and a stolen pick-up truck in a wooded area off of the 3000 block of Skinner Mill Road.
The ATM was found chained to a large pine tree with more than $20,000 stolen from inside shortly before 6 p.m., Richmond County Sheriffs authorities said. The green Dodge pickup truck used in the heist was found in a large ditch nearby, according to a sheriffs report. The truck had been reported stolen on Tuesday.
The thieves hot-wired a forklift stolen from First Baptist Church on Walton Way Extension at about 2:26 a.m. Tuesday and used it to lift the ATM from its concrete base at the Georgia Bank and Trust branch on Wheeler Road. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found the forklift, with the engine running, in the parking lot of the bank.
Got to give them credit for a well thought out plan.
The M in ATM stands for Machine. So you're saying an Automatic Teller Machine Machine was recovered. That's like saying PIN number, or Hot Water Heater, it's repetitive.
That is true Awyld1.
Just proves that a Dodge truck is tough. Boy we need some construction jobs to get these skilled people to work!!!! They are good.
Sounds like we need a volunteer force to patrol the county after midnight. That had to be a noisy operation and would have been noticed by anyone riding by. They really took a risk.
Why would anyone hike on Skinner Mill rd?
thank you tqpotqpo! another fine example is..."C.S.R.A. Area"...you hear/read it regularly...it's straight from the "Department of Redundancy Department!"
someone at the chronicle got a clue and edited the online article...took the word "Machine" out of the title and body of the article...hooray!...proper grammar prevails!
First. WHO CARES about the grammatical errors!!! Second, yes, a well thought out and executed plan! Is it wrong to give the thieves kudos? Ha, just kidding.
20,000 maybe it was Betty returning the money.
well native007...first: apparently you don't...education does not seem to be high on your "to do" list...you left out a question mark in your first sentence...unless "WHO" is the name of someone with a concern about grammar. second: the chronicle does and should...that's why they corrected their error.
$20,000, someone didn't get their check from Betty. What she did was no different than what these thieves did. Maybe they knew someone who needed a surgery.
I CARE about good grammar and so do lots of other people. Universal panacea is another favorite redundancy, like forward planning, free gift, foreign import, etc. and people like to say "verbal" (which encompasses both written and spoken words) when they really mean "oral," as in "They only had a verbal agreement" because they have some vague notion that "oral" sounds dirty. Why was the ATM chained to a tree? Did they do that then use the forklift or whatever to yank it open? I agree that these thieves are a cut or two in intelligence above the average CSRA convenience store smash-and-grabber.
Good Lord. BOTH of you should use that wonderful education on getting some sort of lives! I guess I am just one who enjoys comments that have to do with the story.
Wonder where the next ATM heist will be? You know the success of this heist will make them hungry for more. Now, if someone notices a forklift riding down the road after midnight maybe you should get a little curious.
I can't wait! Then Dixiechick and DrBooger can use their grammatical skills to inform us of how smart they are!
Dixieman - you would know, if you had read the article, that the forklift was still running in the bank parking lot when deputies arrived. So, no they did not use the forklift to yank it open after the chained it to a tree.
Well, it has been a slow day and sometimes the irrelevant stuff is the most interesting and entertaining...
Curly12353 is probably right. I find it amazing that no one noticed a forklift driving down the street or saw a P/U with an ATM on back.
Grammar police, what a waste, why should I edit my post to impress people?
sorry in advance for the grammer. The machine was most likely chained to the tree to get it off the truck. chain to tree and drive the truck away. How else do you get a 2000-2500 pound object off. second yes this does prove that a Dodge Ram 1500 is a tough truck (its only rated for a half ton). on a side note i know for a fact that the truck was not reported stolen till Wednesday morning
