Suspect sought in fatal, late-night shooting

A suspect remains at large after a Waynesboro man was fatally shot last night at a Gordon Highway convenience store.

According to Richmond County sheriff's investigators, Robert Lee Stone Jr., 45, of Webster Road in Waynesboro, died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooting took place at the Circle K store in the 1500 block of Gordon Highway about 9:35 p.m.

The suspect being sought by police is described as a black male wearing a yellow shirt. He is described as being in his mid-20s with slim build and medium height.

The victim is a truck driver who frequently parked his rig in the parking lot of this “truck stop”. Mr. Stone also frequently slept in the cab of the truck in the parking lot, rather than driving back to Waynesboro. At this time, motive is not known, a statement from the Sheriff's Office said.

This was Richmond County’s 19th murder this year. There were 20 murders this time last year.
