WASHINGTON -- The nastiness of August's health care debate reached into the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday as President Barack Obama tried to move his reform plan forward.

South Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson shouted "You lie!" after Obama had talked about illegal immigrants.

It wasn't the only interruption during Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress in the House of Representatives. Earlier, Republicans laughed when Obama acknowledged that there are still significant details to be worked out before a health care overhaul can be passed.

Wilson's outburst caused Obama to pause briefly before he went on with his speech. Overhead in the visitors' gallery, first Lady Michelle Obama shook her head from side to side.

How does calling someone a

How does calling someone a sow advance your argument? You hate her, and you think she is pig-like, good to know, but why? Is it because she's not pretty (fat or something?) or because she likes pork barrel spending. Do you see how that name-calling does not help me understand your argument? It makes me think you are mean. I am probably alone. I hope you are less angry tomorrow and have a better day.

"Representative Wilson's

"Representative Wilson's behavior tonight exemplifies everything that is wrong in Washington," Democrat Rob Miller said in a statement provided to CNN. "Instead of engaging in childish name-calling and disrespecting our Commander-in-Chief, Joe Wilson should be working towards a bipartisan solution that makes quality, affordable health care available to each and every South Carolinian.
Miller added: "He owes both the President and the people of this district an apology for his embarrassing behavior during tonight's speech."

@philo-publis: The majority

@philo-publis: The majority of people in SC are as weary as everyone else of the endless game-playing. When do we get back to trying to make our country better? It can't always be about what you're against, or who you're trying to smear now. When do the good ideas begin? Haven't heard any from Republicans in a very, very long time. To the point at hand: No provision of any reform proposal before the Congress extends benefits to illegal immigrants. Not even remotely. The notion is as absurd and obviously false as Sarah Palin's "death panels". And like Palin, Wilson isn't so dumb that he doesn't know this. It's deliberate, calculated theater. It's more fear and distortion from a political party that has nothing else to offer these days.

Ah, yes! That's what I want

Ah, yes! That's what I want to finally see in the House! Outrage! Passion! Upset! Aren't you all getting tired of the milquetoast nambee-pambee politicians...who strive to "get-along" by allowing some of the most idiotic, grievous, and patently dishonest statements to be uttered without challenge? Why...because they forgot they have a pair and they don't want to be perceived as "tacky". Ha! Through the 1800's it was common to have shouting matches ensue while a member of Congress or the President was speaking. It tended to weed out the chaff from the grain if you get my meaning. A person finally gets tired of hearing the same ol' lies spew forth, like the good Congressman. If I had been there I would have yelled out a "Hear hear!" right behind Congressman Wilson's "You lie!"

Obamacare will never work!

Obamacare will never work! Give it a rest. The man is two faced and a liar. He wants to take my right to carry a firearm but his wife carries one. For twenty years he listened to a racist preacher. Now he wants the 85% of americans who work and have healthcare coverage to pay for the 15% who dont have it. Now you tell me how this will work for you but I pay enough already. I cant afford to pay any more to anybody. Obama is just another loser lost in his own lies. We dont need more goverment telling us more to do. We need less goverment and more freedoms. opps! I forgot in a free country we really are not free. Thats just a marketing ploy!

If a member of Congress had acted as wilson did tonight with Pres. Bush, you on the right would be having a hissy fit. Coming from a man who apparently was in the military to act with such disrespect is disgusting.

teharper428, MOST on the

teharper428, MOST on the right are very upset that he acted this way towards our President. And, so are the republican members of congress whom have already made statements regarding this matter. Personally, I strongly believe there were many mistruths in the Presiden't speach nor do I belive that my tax dollars should pay for others health care - However, his outburst was unaccpetable and again, MOST on the right think so as well. What I don't see is many democrats standing up to speak out against situations where democrats are doing wrong such as Pelosi's frequent outbursts and lies instead they are too busy standing up for "the green czar Van Jones whom should have NEVER made it as far as he did.

Another thank you to padfoot.

Another thank you to padfoot. The speech tonight was nothing more than a basic rehash of what the President has been saying all along, only in a less bipartisan manner. I'm less shocked by Rep. Wilson's behavior than I am by our President's. The man basically called all of us, who have actually taken the time to read the many variations of the bill, liars and proceeded to talk as smoothly as any used car salesman I have ever met. He needs to understand that most Americans - whether they be Republican, Independent, or moderate Democrat - have the intelligence to think for themselves and understand exactly what can happen if the current bill form is passed. I'd have had a lot more respect for the President if he had said 'let's scrap the entire thing and start again fresh, with ideas from both sides and no interference from the Botox queen.'

We are a border state to South Carolina. This yelling out in the the chambers was embarrassing to South Carolina and our Country. This supposely 62 year old man yelled out in the Chambers as if he was at a PEP RALLY in a high school gym. How unclassy is this? What world does he live in? Whether you agree of disagree with our President this type of arena always called for CLASS. He really made the citizens of his district 22 which covers Beaufort to the aristocrats of Hilton Head look stupid.

Yall are stupid and you wonder why my generation doesn't get involved, because our role models are stupid. In my vivid vocabulary, I can't think of a better than just plain stupid. Half of yall are racist, and there isn't anyone playing the race card, I call a spade a spade, and the other half are just crazy. I digress, my generation has no one to look to these days. And have of you can't read so I know you haven't read the whole bill....LIARS!!!

Southern white Christian

Southern white Christian Conservatives are hypocrits... I have preached this for weeks. His conduct represents the foolish behavior we have come to expect from most Conservatives. They are disrespectful to anyone that opposes their foolishness to the point that we can not have reasonable debates with them. Southern white Christian Conservatives offer nothing to resolving our healthcare crisis. Sen. Jim DeMint from SC said it is his mission to defeat this bill so that Conservatives can break President Obama. Nevertheless, it is no secret that I believe Southern white Christian Conservatives are truly America's greatest hypocrits, but incidents like this prove their level of desperation too. We should not expect anything better from a political party of fools. I am very concerned that we are fooling ourselves about race relations in America. It seems to me that electing the first black President has some how caused Southern white Christian Conservatives to become extremely comfortable making their racial hatred publically known through their behavior towards President Obama. The world watched our President get insulted over a Conservative lie.. What shame!!

Very disrespectful, it dosen't matter who the president is. Just goes to show the kind of person he is.I would expect that in another country but not in America. I hope he is proud of himself. But I also think he will regret it.

Joe Wilson is the liar. There

Joe Wilson is the liar. There is nothing in the bill about free health care for illegals. And he later apologized. So even he knows he looks beyond stupid and is just trying to save face. Good bye Joe. Game over for you, except in the silly South among the rest of the loons. He and Paul Broun, two peas in a pod who should have stayed on the funny farm.

1. If it were a Democrat

1. If it were a Democrat heckling a Republican president, Nancy Pelosi and all Democrats would be applauding the heckler reminding us of the freedom of speech! 2. John McCain, you no longer speak for the Republican Party! If it were not for Sarah Palin on your campaign Obama would have won with more than 70% of the vote. The conservative base never supported you and never will.

CParker, your comments are

CParker, your comments are ignorant, blatent lies and race bating. First, the man was wrong and immediately apoligized. Second MOST conservatives immediately said he was wrong and should not have acted in such a manner and apoligize, even most conservatives on this board think he was out of line something we rarealy if ever hear from the deomcrats about their own actions or that of this current administration. As for bringin race into this, you are a bafoon as it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE - if you merely want a black person in office, then look no further than the head of the Republican Party, Michale Steele or vote in Alan Keys or Herman Cain. It isn't about race, most conservatives could care less (there are always idiots on both sides) but most are sick of the lies, and the fact that our defecit has in a mere 200 days surpassed ALL past presidents, combined. Agree or disagree on health care and other issues, they are all about raising taxes and bigger government which conservatives are completly against - therefore, we are not against Obama personally and could care less about his race but strongly disagree with the path he is taking us down to a larger govt.

Paul Broun is a liar, Sarah

Paul Broun is a liar, Sarah Palin is a liar, and Joe Wilson showed his backside. Maybe with this display, Rep. Broun will have some competition for the title of "Stupidest man in Congress". The President rightly said he will call out these people out who continue to spread lies abouth HR 3200. I hope this means a one on one session in the Oval office with no beer for refreshment!

qnx, you ARE liars...or grossly misinformed. You're definitely being led around by the nose by your rightwing leaders, who want nothing but to defeat healthcare reform and thus cripple Pres. Obama for the rest of his tenure in office. Their scare tactics are obviously working with one segment of the population.

Asisitinaug... You wish I

Asisitinaug... You wish I were wrong about the conduct of Southern white Christian Conservatives. This has been my complaint about them for a very long time. Southern white Christian Conservatives are hypocrits that play with religion until they are opposed. Then they hide their crosses in their pockets and toss chairs at people during townhall meetings. They stoop to telling people Obama is going to kill grandmama, he wants to steal from white folks to pay for health insurance for illegal aliens, or telling senior citizens this proposal is designed to terminate medicare. Then when the President calls them out on national TV about their myths, he gets insulted by a Southern white Christian Conservative that has been brainwashed to believe those same lies. There is nothing new here... Southern white Christian Conservatives are a bit worst than hypocrits because they are absolute liars as well. Don't accuse me of making this up. What you need to do is calm this lynch mob mentality that has developed in Southern white Christian Conservatives. Obama has run Southern white Christian Conservatives insane. They are the ones that might need help with a pre-existing condition. White thugs!

update: His opponent has raised over $50K since Wilson's outburst. Also his website miraculously had to go down "due to maintenance" after the speech. He's pulled this before. "Wilson called Congressman Bob Filner "viscerally anti-American" and claimed that he had a "hatred of America" after Filner suggested the United States supplied chemical and biological weapons to Saddam Hussein. Wilson said later that he didn't intend to insult Filner." Washington Post. He's got a fairly safe district since it's gerrymandered and somehow includes Columbia and runs west then south to Hilton Head, but it would be a hoot to see him lose.
