The granddaughter and great-grandson of former Columbia County Sheriff Edward Tankersley died early this morning in what authorities say was a murder-suicide in Appling.

Nancy Tankersley Anderson, 56, and Robert Anderson, 24, were pronounced dead at 3:37 a.m. by Columbia County Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison, said Coroner Vernon Collins.

Both bodies were found in a rear bedroom of 6461 Washington Road, Appling, about two miles west of Pollard’s Corner, said Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Steve Morris. The home is owned by Ms. Anderson’s father, Robert Tankersley, Mr. Collins said. Mr. Tankersley is the son of former Sheriff Tankersley, who died in 1986.

Mr. Tankersley called the sheriff’s office when he was awakened shortly after 3 a.m. after hearing “four or five gunshots” and then finding the bodies of his daughter and grandson in a rear bedroom, Capt. Morris said.

Responding deputies found Mr. Anderson’s body in a bed with what appear to be multiple gunshot wounds to the head, while Mrs. Anderson was dead from what appears to be a single gunshot wound, Mr. Collins said. A .38-caliber Taurus handgun was recovered from the scene, Capt. Morris said.

Both bodies were taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Augusta for autopsies, Mr. Collins said.

Describing a possible motive for the suspected murder-suicide, Mr. Collins said Mrs. Anderson left a two-page letter, dated Wednesday, explaining that she had decided to take her son’s life and her own because of his mounting debts from fines and probation. The letter included detailed plans for their funerals, Mr. Collins added.

“The son had some legal issues and some fines and stuff, and she decided to end his life and hers, too,” Mr. Collins said. “She had this planned just how long I don’t know, but she made closure with it yesterday and final closure this morning.”

Capt. Morris said Mr. Anderson had a criminal history that included drug violations and bad-check charges.

thank you, apositivesoul! I

thank you, apositivesoul! I hope the same thing for everyone you've written about, despite their harsh words on this forum, I would hope that our community would STILL reach out to them in a time like this. Family members might not necessarily come here for compassion but if they do come to this article they should receive no less! I whole heartedly agree with prayingforthoseinvolved, Rob is a murder VICTIM. like I've stated before. And as for throwing out our judgments on Nancy Anderson, she was just as much a part of the Tankersley and Anderson family as Rob. What she did was wrong and in no way am I condoning it or saying I understand what she did but she was a mother, a daughter, and a friend to many people in our community who still LOVE her and deserve the respect of you keeping negative comments to yourself. Just because a forum is for opinions does that mean you should sacrifice respect and sympathy for those involved?

Oh and sassygirl12, those

Oh and sassygirl12, those "stupid idiots" obviously suffer from mental health issues. No one who hasn't suffered from a disease of the mind would understand it. She's standing up in front of God for her sins now, nothing done on this Earth will change her judgment day, so grow up a little bit.

Some of you people on here

Some of you people on here disgust me and are showing that you have no heart at all. May God not only bless this family during this tragic time, but also bless you for being so cold hearted. You can point blame where you want, you can say what you want, you can ACT like you are perfect and have NEVER sinned in your life, but that just makes you more of a sinner. Have respect and stop acting like you or your family is perfect! What a crazy world we live in and it's just getting worse because of people like some of these on here. What a shame!

uhmmm murphy I did read the

uhmmm murphy I did read the whole article you twit, did I not mention it all? Yes I'd report the girls bad checks if they had to do with her rape, it is part of the story. His criminal past was according to the coroner was the motive!! Why did the coroner even release the contents of the suicide note? You didn't say one word about him, you just attacked the AC. They didn't blame the murder victim becuase of his past, they reported dteails of what caused the murder suicide according to the suicide note. Had he only recieved traffic tickets, people would be like omg thats not worth warranting murder. Just becuase you think his drugs and theft were bad, does not mean it was not part of the story. They didn't make up the contents of the suicide note, someone reported it to them, the coroner! Had this not been someone you knew, you would have been wondering details and wanting them to report the reson too, had it been a school massacre w/suicide, should they not give details of the fact those killed were bullys that harrassed and taunted the killer??

I apologized to you for being

I apologized to you for being harsh in your time of sorrow, but you resort to name calling. I take it back, you are probably just one of his druggie friends, thats why you are taking it to heart. There was no justified reason for this tragedy, and I just erased my speculation on why out of respect for the deceased. But people with common sense may be able to figure it out. Once again, if you don't want to be remembered for doing bad, don't do it. His bad, though it did not warrant death, was a direct link to this horrible tragedy and was reported. Take you anger out on the people who leaked the details of a confidential suicide note not the AC nor me MORON!!!!

Seems everyone is on the kid

Seems everyone is on the kid for his mistakes. I say look at the Mother and what she did. The way I see it , she was the mistake not him. If you talk about anything it should be her. I have not seen a word about her actions, behavial problems, drug addictions.etc. get off of the kid... was the mother being sheltered by her family history. The Mother was sick not the kid. To bad know one noticed...

2 B there were a lot of

2 B there were a lot of comments about the mother. Obviously she was depressed severely. Some pretty harsh and like CCmom said @ 10:13, unless you have been there you, have no idea how a disease of the mind can be, its horrid, and everyone makes mistakes and sounds like this man was trying to turn his life around. Don't get my posts wrong, I in no way blame this child. I understand his mistakes and hers. My posts were merely pointing out that a journalist didn't report his past for no reason to murphy. It was a driect link to the trgedy, thats why it was reported. Had it not been a factor of the murder suicide I would agree reporting the victims criminal past would be in bad taste and disrespectful. Everyone always blasts the AC for no details on what happened and why, this time they had details made available to them and just reported them is all I was saying.

I cannot believe the things

I cannot believe the things people are posting!!!! You should be ashamed of yourselves. I know the family personally and Rob, just like all of us have made mistakes in the past. He was turning his life around working and going to school. He paid his debt to society and learned his lesson. His "criminal actions" were years ago. Do not judge lest you be judged. No matter what he did he did not deserve to die!!!! He was a brother, a son, an uncle, grandson, and a friend. If anyone had any warning signs of what Ms. Nancy had planned we would have done something. Maybe there were no warning signs, maybe no one saw them, I don't know. But please keep your horrible opinons to yourselves and let them rest in peace. The family has to begin to pick up the peices and start healing. Please only post your sympathies, if only out of respect for the family that is still here. RIP Rob and Ms. Nancy. We will miss you!!!

This is very hard for me to

This is very hard for me to read. Frist let me say that Nacy was like a 2nd mom to me for many years. Nancy mom and my Grandmom were cousins anyway getting to my point iti is very hard for me any someone that knows Nancy to read some of the things that has been said about her . She has been though alot and please if you do not have anything nice to say do not say anything..
Now that i have said that i can post what i wanted too .
When i think of Rob i think of a very happy person full of life and always made me happy and picked on me at times couse i did not know anything about how to fish or other things (i'm from the city) he very fast became a brother to me and was always someone that i could talk to about what was going on in my life. When i moved to Ohio me and Rob did not get to talk alot . In many ways i feel that a part of me has died and i well never get that part back. Anyone that had a chance to know Rob was lucky and a better person for knowing him. He made my life so much better .

I well miss you and love you R.I.P. ROB AND NANCY

I am so sorry to hear about

I am so sorry to hear about this tragedy.
This was a very well prominent family.
It's hard to believe this sort of thing can happen to someone you've known all your life.
My heart goes out to them all.

TO the augusta chronicle, you

TO the augusta chronicle, you all did my brother an injustice when you all posted the negative words about my brother. Yall must not be godly people to have done that, my brother paid his debt for the crimes he committed and was on trying to get his life back on the right track. What my mother did carries no excuse, but my brothers problems were not the cause of this. Shame on all you readers that believe the garbage the news media has spread about my family. Again to the people who have offered their thoughts and prayers thank you and to the others shame on yall.

Its funny one can leave

Its funny one can leave comment on a murder-suicide on this article. Such a tragedy. But its apparent all local publications and media outlets must be worried about no more furniture advertising revenue, by not leaving comment boxes on the Jay W. tragedy. It was a tragedy and my sympathy goes out the family. However, I have been told by many members of our community and the jewish community that Mr. W. suffered from a form of mental disorder that could have led to his tragic demise. I would think the family would find it best to make it public rather than people gossiping and snickering behind their backs. I would also hope the Putnam County authorities are not afraid of advertising dollar loss. If so it might force us all into becoming a Kleptomaniac, driving us do crazy things. Something that will all catch up with us.

To: mistert83 I am so sorry

To: mistert83
I am so sorry that you have had to endure the words that these horrible people have left on here. As if you are not going through enough right now...the daggers dig deeper. I only met your brother 2 times, he was a "hoot"...I know several of my friends that were friends of Rob's and they all say how wonderful he was doing and what an effort he'd made to get back on track. God has his reasons, we don't always understand...but keep your head up, take care of your family and yourself....don't let the bad overcome you. My prayers go out to you and the rest of your family.

Alan....you did the right

Alan....you did the right thing by removing the comment section on Jay Weinberger. However, you've allowed this comment section to remain. Did you run out of "decency" for the Tankersley/Anderson family? I have competely lost all respect for this newspaper and you have yourself to thank. I WAS a paying customer for over 25 yrs.....subscription has been cancelled.
