When Seattle Seahawks safety Deon Grant spoke last spring at Josey High School’s National Honor Society awards banquet, he promised each of the group’s 14 seniors a new laptop.

The professional football player and Josey graduate will deliver this week on that pledge. Parents and students can pick up the computers Tuesday at the school.

“This is not out of the ordinary, not for Deon because he gives back so much,” said Gussie Carlyle, a math teacher and honor society adviser at Josey. “Deon is just that kind of person. He’s like my son. I admire him so much.”

Mr. Grant, who played college football at the University of Tennessee, appeared at the awards banquet as a favor for Mrs. Carlyle, who taught him algebra I, pre-calculus and calculus. He was also a member of the academic decathlon team and National Honor Society while at Josey.

Mrs. Carlyle, who still keeps in touch with her former student , said the football standout excelled off and on the field.

“He was a student I pushed because he was an exceptional athlete, but he was smart, too,” she said.

Josey Principal Ronald Wiggins said there was never any doubt Mr. Grant would fulfill his promise.

“If Deon says he is going to do something, he’s going to do it,” Dr. Wiggins said.

The laptops will come loaded with software for the 14 students. Most of them have already started attending college classes.

I think this is very nice of Mr. Grant!!!! However, Mr. Wiggins is a joke. I still find it hard to believe that he was moved from Sego Middle to Josey. I just hope for the parents and students that he runs a tighter ship than he did at Sego.

What a breath of fresh air, a story featuring an NFL player that doesn't read like a police blotter. It's great to see this kind of story about a real NFL role model.
