A fatal mobile home fire claimed the life of a Columbia County resident this morning.

Johnny Bell, 67, likely died due to smoke inhalation, according to Columbia County Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison.

The fire was started by candles in the back room of his home in the 600 block of Al Dempsy Road around 6:30 a.m.

“Mr. Bell did not have electricity, so he was using a lantern and candles to light his home,” Garrison said.

When crews arrived to the home, the fire had engulfed the single-wide mobile home, Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue spokeswoman Honey Shore said.

An autopsy will be conducted on Bell at a later date.

Sad that a person that is 67

Sad that a person that is 67 has no power. Way to go Obama make sure our older citiznes go with out. No money for SS next year but medicad is going up. Must be nice to be worth millions in personal wealth but do not have a clue on how other people in this great country live. Rant to Georgia Power for disconnecting the power to the trailer. Big bad Georgia Power might lose a 100.00 this month in profit. All I am saying it is a sad day, sad country, sad world!!!

What will it take for us to

What will it take for us to acknowledge the poor? We give to much to foreign countries and complain about giving to our own poor.

Don't blame Obama. 99% of

Don't blame Obama. 99% of the poor are that way because of it's their choice. It's not Obama's fault, Bush's fault, my fault, or your fault. People choose their own path in life. Now if somebody has a legitimate disability it's a different story. But most of them don't fall into that category legitimately.

True, yellowhammer, poverty

True, yellowhammer, poverty is a choice. If we make the correct choices and stop depending on our lousy government, we'll be a lot better off. Obama couldn't even take care of his own aunt when she lived in this country, so what makes anyone think he'll take care of them.

I agree Big O, someone just

I agree Big O, someone just needs to tell that to all the [filtered word]'s living off the gov't dole and the bleeding hearts who let them continue to do so!! Diabled and elderly are one thing, they should get help. But all these [filtered word]'s who are able to have 5 kids could also work and pay their own way instead of making more gov't dependants. Instead they come up with sob stories and scams to live better than some people who work 40 hours a week. It's sickening!

Why should the disabled and

Why should the disabled and elderly get subsidies? Parents, or as the case around here, breeders needs to take responsibility for their children. If you can't afford to support a disabled child then don't have children. If you can't afford to retire then don't. If your nestegg has dried up after you retired then go get a job. People need to take some accountability. If these people's families don't care enough about them to take care of them then why should the taxpayer?

Geez people get a grip here,

Geez people get a grip here, does anybody really know the whole story here??? Maybe he didn't have any family, maybe he was a drunk who spent all his money on booze or drugs and maybe it was just his time to go. I don't think that Obama had anything to do with his power being cut. And Big O with his age I am sure there aren't that many jobs out there for him, maybe he had already tried and had not luck. Regardless, unless you know the situation don't go throwing blame where it may not belong.

The Big O maybe this person did noit have any family left. Back when Mr. Bell was working maybe he did not have an option of 401k etc. I am sure The Big O if you were in his shoes you might be thankful to have somebody help you out. Instead of being alone and by your self

The Big O....WOW...born with

The Big O....WOW...born with that silver spoon and attitude on the same day? Glad it's not or was not your parent, friend or neighbor who for whatever reason did NOT have electricity. In Heaven, Mr. Bell won't have to worry about candles....or about critical pieces of **** that don't know everything about what goes on in this world. God's got it from here though, so don't believe anyone will need your charity or your opinion about things you know little about. Have a good day anyway.

I thought Georgia Power had

I thought Georgia Power had an account you could contribute to that helped pay electrical bills for those who were unable to do so. Maybe he was on Jefferson Power, who knows. Sounds like he's been living off his SSI (which he is perfectly entitled to do so) and was unable to pay his bill. It's very possible he refused help from family members. He may have been trying to wait until the first of the month to have his lights turned back on. Unfortunately we don't know the entire story so we shouldn't judge this man. How sad that so many seniors are still getting the short end of the stick. My sympathies to his family.

GNX well Said I am laying

GNX well Said I am laying blame on Obama which I have never done on a public forum before. While Obama is on vacation hob knobbong with the rich, a front page story in the Chronicle stats no raise in SS for senior citizens, BUT lets raise medicare on there little checks they get every month. Has he stepped upped to the plate and said. I will not let this happen to the Senior citizens of this country. No he has said nothing at all. Give me a flipping break. Yes I do add a little extra every month to scana during the winter and Georgia Power to help those in need.

Um, before we get on the

Um, before we get on the power company too hard. Don't they also have to check the electrical distribution in the dwelling to make sure it is safe?

Didn't this guy have a fire about 5 years ago? One wonders if the house was 'disconnected" for being unsafe to hook up.

gnx, you are right, out there

gnx, you are right, out there is jefferson electric. Big O..... Not everyone can save for a fat retirement. There are some people who work all their life hard at low paying jobs who end up getting disabled and need a little help. If no one worked those low paying custodial jobs and other jobs no one else wants to do we would be in trouble. Some of those who work hard for little money are what makes this world go round. At least they are trying to be self sufficient. Some disabled physically and mentally work very very hard, but due to medical expenses can't make ends meet. You are a cold spoiled person it sounds like to me. While I agree with your theory on the sorry lazy breeders, not everyone chooses to be in a poor position like those [filtered word]'s. Some have legitimate reasons and terrible tragedys that have happened and deserve help! If you are lucky enough to have more money than you will ever need that can cover any tragedy that befalls you and every member of your family, good for you, not everyone is so lucky to be tragedy free!!
