Evans alligator killed, dismembered by poachers

A 9-foot alligator that lived in a pond in Evans was killed and dismembered by poachers over the weekend, according to the owner of the property.

“They came out here and cut his whole head off, and also his two front legs and his tail,” said Donnie Brown, the owner of Brown Feed & Seed off Washington Road.

The alligator, estimated to weigh more than 200 pounds, lived in a swampy pond on property behind his store.

Mr. Brown said it is likely the thieves brought a chainsaw or reciprocating saw with them, indicating the incident was premeditated.

“We think it happened late Saturday night,” he said.

The remaining portion of the gator carcass was found by workers this morning.

Mr. Brown said he will report the crime to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Although Georgia has a season for alligator hunting, the season is not currently open – and Columbia County is not in a part of the state where a season even exists, said Law Enforcement Sgt. Doyte Chaffin of the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division.

“While there is a season in certain counties, Columbia County doesn’t have a population that is viable to hunt,” he said, adding that the offenders could face a series of charges including trespassing, hunting in a closed season and possession of illegally taken wildlife.

Mr. Brown said it is likely the poachers planned to skin the tail for the meat and perhaps save the head for mounting.

“I knew we had a few people who were on me about the gator, and didn’t want it back there, but I didn’t think nobody would do something like this,” Mr. Brown said.

Hello people did any of you

Hello people did any of you read the story?? The reason the poachers would be in trouble is because of "trespassing, hunting in a closed season and possession of illegally taken wildlife." Plus why should the owner be in trouble? The story of there being an alligator in that pond has been in the newspaper before and the DNR had been inform, they just never did anything about it. And marandan-why is it the owners responsiblity to fence in the yard? If a stray dog came into your yard and bit a child that isn't yours, would you be responsible?

Why don't all you who are so

Why don't all you who are so upset about the killing and dismemberment of this helpless, inoffensive alligator come on over to Broad and 13th Streets every 3rd Friday at 5 pm to protest the killing and dismembering of unborn human babies. Surely, as helpless and inoffensive as they are, they rate some of your outrage. Right? Right, Dash?

Surely somebody knows

Surely somebody knows something about this. I mean, it would have taken more than one person to get the thing out of the pond to begin with. Also, if anybody's friends show up with an alligator-foot necklace or a mounted alligator head in their living room, they need to say something! I mean, come on. SOMEBODY knows something about this. Of course, white trash probably takes up for white trash, which is who probably did this horrible deed to begin with. Bastards.

I also think it's time Mr.

I also think it's time Mr. Brown put up a fence and closed up that roadway. If it's private property, nobody should be driving through there anyway. It's used as a cut through by lazy people wanting to avoid traffic. I say put up a gate at the back of the store and at the end of the dirt road so nobody drives back there. What trashy people will do amazes me. If CCSD finds who did it, the offenders should be took out and whipped.

What Nazi Regime looks over

What Nazi Regime looks over the post?? Some of these "removed comments" did NOT violate the comments policy (and no most of them I did not agree with, but they were the persons opinion). It should be policy that you post what part they violated or say "we took it down because we wanted to".

If you hurry and take the carcass over to Terry Laniers butcher shop, Maybe you can get some stew cuts and about 2 pairs of boots, 6- wallets, and three purses for the little lady. You have to see the good that can come of any misfortune.

For the gutless wonders who

For the gutless wonders who committed this crime, hope you pay dearly for what you have done. Now that you have shown your cowardly ways with animals, it can be expected that you will now hunt and murder/maim humans because that is the nature of your "game."

Poor animal. Living in

Poor animal. Living in Beaufort County, SC, we have gators everywhere - in every pond - and the only time they cause a problem is when human beings feed them. Then, they are humanely removed and put down quickly. If they are not fed, they are left alone and they leave people alone. That gator would have left people alone if no one ever fed it and anyone that poaches animals will kill any animal - including neighbor's pets.
