Family break-in victim while woman in Augusta burn unit

ATHENS, Ga. -- Doctors on Thursday began to operate on an Athens woman fighting for her life two days after her boyfriend allegedly doused her with kerosene and set her on fire.

Elisa Denise "Lisa" Davenport remained in an induced coma, while surgeons at Doctors Hospital in Augusta prepared her for skin grafts, according to her brother, Eric Davenport.

Meanwhile, the victim's 13-year-old cousin and an older teen are accused of breaking into the west Athens home that Eric shares with his fiancee, Cynthia Randolph.

The burglars knew that the apartment would be empty, since Eric Davenport has been busy dealing with the family emergency, he said.

"We don't know if my sister is going to live or die, and for them to do something like this, it's just so sad that you got people out there like this," Eric Davenport said.

The cousin and 18-year-old Laquan Williams went to the couple's apartment at Parkview Homes Extension off West Broad Street about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said, and after knocking on the door to make sure no one was home, they slipped in through a back window.

They stole Randolph's engagement ring, a laptop computer that Emory University loaned her as she studies to become a nurse's assistant, and $1,600 that Eric Davenport saved from his job as a mover to spend on their wedding.

"Every week, we'd put $20 or $30 in our marriage jar and watch it make progress," he said. "We wouldn't touch that money, but lately we've been taking some ... out of the jar because of what happened to my sister. That's how we were getting gas money to go back and forth to the hospital."

With his sister critically injured, Davenport's employer allowed him to take time off without pay until he is ready to return to work, he said.

In all, the thieves stole belongings valued at $6,432.

Eric Davenport was driving home Wednesday night when he saw his young cousin walking in his apartment complex with a Spiderman backpack that resembled one that belonged to Davenport's son.

He honked, but the 13-year-old looked away, as if trying to not be recognized.

"When I made it to the house a neighbor said my cousin and another boy were in our house, but I really didn't think that much of it because my mind was on my sister," Davenport said. "But when I walked inside, I saw they totally trashed it."

Officers found the two thieves at Williams' home on Highland Park Drive.

Both were charged with burglary, and Williams was charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, police said.

The older teen was booked into the Clarke County Jail, and deputies took Davenport's cousin to the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center.

"What happened lets me know, as a Christian, that we're living in some real bad times when there are family members that don't care and you have people setting other people on fire," Davenport said. "After what happened, I couldn't do nothing but hug my kids and fiancee as we cried together, and I pray for my sister, and I pray for those kids who broke into my home."

The man who Athens-Clarke police said intentionally burned Lisa Davenport - 49-year-old Phillip Scruggs - is held without bond at the Clarke County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and first-degree arson.

Davenport was trying to end her relationship with Scruggs - who previously served a two-year sentence for stabbing her with a screwdriver - when she was set afire in her apartment at Bethel Midtown Village.

The 4 a.m. fire gutted her apartment and spread to others in the 20-unit building north of downtown Athens, displacing other residents, police said.

Wow...way to be compassionate

Wow...way to be compassionate this morning. This family is falling apart at the seams, and all anyone cares about is grammar. While the grammar is atrocious, it's nothing we haven't seen over the past few months. My prayers go out to this family. Seems like no one can catch a break. As far as the cousins, the family needs to make sure that they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. AFTER THE FAMILY MEMBERS BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF THEM.

"Laquan", Is that really a

"Laquan", Is that really a name? Sounds like a dish washing detergent. How pitiful this situation is. Just goes to show the lack of morals some kids have these days. The lure of big shiny rims and bling will lead someone to do this. I hope this lady recovers well, her boyfriend put to death, and these thieves go to jail for a long time. Let me jump on that jury!!

Eric, the REALLY SAD thing

Eric, the REALLY SAD thing is that you have FAMILY members that would do this to you. I think that your 13 year-old cousin needs a whippin', and you need to pop his mommy and daddy in the mouth, because it is apparent they were not watching over their little "angel". Laquan needs to be your indentured servant until he pays you back for everything. And he could probably use a butt whipping as well. Sorry excuse for family members.

What difference does a tital

What difference does a tital make on a story like this? I think everyone needs to pay attention to the content of this story rather than trivial things like the title. Let us all join together and pray for this woman and her family. I am uplifted by Eric's attitude. Maybe he has taught us a lesson this morning. Eric, you and your entire family will be in my prayers.

Take a look around. If anyone has ever wondered what it would be like to be in hell.......we're living it. Forget about the saying "this world is going to hell in a hand basket". We're already living in it. May God bless and protect this family during this horrible time.

Let's hope justice prevails

Let's hope justice prevails in this case. Phillip Scruggs needs to be locked up forever and a day; the "family" members have shown they are no family at all. To take advantage of people under these circumstances is saying they have no moral upbringing, especially when they are related to the victims. Many prayers to the victims.

With family like that who

With family like that who needs enemies...sheesh. What really bothers me about the boyfriend though is that he is only being charged with assualt and arson? What is up with that? If you set someone on fire you are trying to kill them...why no attempted murder charges??

I feel for this woman and her brother, there will be more than just physical scars to bear for a very long time after this is over.

so sad when you cannot trust your own family.

fftaz: the perpetrator is the

fftaz: the perpetrator is the EX-boyfriend, not her fiance. However, I agree he should be charged with attempted murder, arson, and even burglary (for being in the woman's home without invitation).

Any idiot that prays for the

Any idiot that prays for the [filtered word] that broke into and trashed his house, deserves it. Where is the outrage. And the pitiful sentences that csiminals receive is a slap in the face, two years for stabbing the girl. How many more years until the citizens start taking action against criminals? Is it time to bring back the lynch mobs for killers and molesters?

Mable8 -- Phillip Scruggs

Mable8 -- Phillip Scruggs should have both knees blown apart, and after an hour or so of his screaming like a little girl, he needs to have a bullet in the head. Do you have any idea the pain that Lisa is going to have endure, during her treatment and rehab ?? I don't want him in jail -- he needs to feel a small portion of what she is going to have to deal with, and then die. I do not want him in jail, I do not want him rehabilitated. Why in the HE77 isn't he charged with attepted murder ?? He is an animal.

The world is going to hell in

The world is going to hell in a shopping cart! People want things they don't have so what they hey...just steal it. Or buy a house they can't afford and expect me to pay for it! These so-called humans that did this have evidently no home training, no morals at all! Again, where are the parents? You can throw millions into school programs, after-school programs, blah blah blah, but sorry parents trump it (most of the time). Enron,Bernie Madoff, etc, they toted their "booty" away in gold-ncrusted shopping carts.

Not millions, GAMEDIC, not

Not millions, GAMEDIC, not even billions, but TRILLIONS have gone into taking care of people like this. And the problem has only gotten exponentially larger and more deadly. But the liberals and democrats said this wouldn't happen and that we are morally obligated to do this as a caring nation. And still, where is the gratitude? Go figure.

I'll tell you what that

I'll tell you what that troubled family needs, and it's a visit from "Madea"!! Don't know if any of ya'll have seen her in a movie...she's hilarious, btw...but this character takes no crap, absolutley NO crap from young people. She'll beat'em in a second if they give her any lip or disrespect. Not trivializing this situation at all, just saying that someone needs to beat some sense into this sorry family. I take that back, the time for the beating was long ago, otherwise this crud wouldn't have happened!

ripjones You have asked the

ripjones You have asked the same question that I have; he isn't, so far, charged with attempted murder and should be. I also stated that I hoped justice prevails--so what's your beef? Sorry, but I do not condone torture (although there are times when it would seem appropriate given the circumstances) because we are at least one level, supposedly, above being barbaric. How unfortunate that some individuals have not grown out of such hideous behavior, but that doesn't mean we should stoop to their level, now does it. And please do not refer to the perpetrator as an animal--animals kill only to survive in their environment; man is supposed to exhibit intelligence (and in this case, the perpetrator hasn't a clue what that means).

Prayers to the victim and her

Prayers to the victim and her family. It's sad that the leeches of society take what others have worked for because they are too lazy and no good to work for their own possessions. These two worthless scum-bags took total advantage of a family emergency to steal and pilfer. I hope they get what they deserve and it's not a vacation I'm thinking of. Hum..........

Mable8, I agree. Calling this

Mable8, I agree. Calling this crew "animals" is disparaging to animals. They do, however, deserve everything that the justice system can deliver. This is twisted beyond belief. After the justice system is done with them, let the family have their turn. That is true justice. As for Scruggs, attempted murder is a good start. Once again, let the family work it out after the justice system does their thing. I'm not clear on how the "family" falls on how they have been treated, but I know what my response would be...
