A hard-driving storm featuring driving rain, lashing winds and pelting hail swept through downtown Augusta about 6 p.m. today, slowing traffic and knocking down trees on Greene, Broad and Reynolds streets.
Richmond County sheriff's dispatchers said they had no reports of traffic problems, but splintered trees and numerous branches were scattered about the downtown business district.
A Georgia Power Co. spokeswoman said there were 58 reported power outages.
An official with the National Weather Service called it a severe thunderstorm with straight-line winds. He said his agency had no measurement of the wind's velocity.
