A 25-year-old Augusta man found shot to death in his car in May was the victim of an attempted carjacking, a prosecutor said today.

Chad V. Shirey, who was killed May 22 on Eidson Drive, was on his way home that night when Demario Holden, 20, and Cornilius Price, 17, noticed Mr. Shirey’s car with 24-inch wheels, Assistant District Attorney Hank Syms said Tuesday in the Richmond County Superior Court bond hearing for the pair.

Mr. Holden followed Mr. Shirey from a Wrightsboro Road convenience store to Eidson Drive. Mr. Price got out, masked and armed, to confront Mr. Shirey, the prosecutor said. When Mr. Shirey tried to drive off to get away, the teen shot him twice, Mr. Syms said.

Mr. Price admitted to being the gunman after he and Mr. Holden were arrested a month after Mr. Shirey’s slaying, the prosecutor said. He told investigators he didn’t think the gun was loaded.

Mr. Price, who was sentenced to probation in February for a weapon charge, has an extensive juvenile court record. Senior Judge Albert M. Pickett denied bond for him, deeming him a potential threat to the community.

Mr. Holden’s bond hearing was canceled because there is a non-bondable warrant for violation of probation. He was sentenced to three years probation last September for possession of cocaine.
