Mother of 11 to plead guilty to neglect today

  • Follow Latest News

The mother of 11 children found living in an abandoned Burke County shack without food, running water or electricity is set to plead guilty today.

Christine D. Long pleaded not guilty after her indictment last year on 10 counts of cruelty to children and five counts of failure to provide an education for her school-age children. She is expected to change her plea to guilty in Burke County Superior Court and receive her sentence today.

Her husband, Jeremy Long, pleaded guilty in June. He was sentenced to three years in prison followed by 10 years on probation.

Mrs. Long blamed the children's condition on her husband and further accused him of being an abusive man who used violence, sexual abuse and starvation to keep the family prisoners in the hovel where they were found, according to her petition for divorce.

Unpublished

This is a horrible case of abuse with no good options. She will get probation and some social services, but the children will have lasting scars from their upbringing. In some cases, adults are not capable of parenting and gov't must step in...this is such a case.

Justus, if you had said the

Justus, if you had said the community must step in, I would agree with you. But not the government. The government is like dandelions, once you let them get a foothold, you have a devil of a time getting rid of them. The less you let them get involved in social issues, the better off we all are.

I hope she realizes how

I hope she realizes how guilty she really is and what a mess she has created laying with a man over and over again knowing she will bring another life into this sad world and future she made for herself. She is as guilty as her husband just because she laid with him knowing the outcome will be horrific (abusive man who used violence, sexual abuse and starvation). She deserves more time in prison just because she made all this happen when she laid with a man who she claimed was bad.
