WASHINGTON --- Congressional officials say the government plans to suspend the popular "cash for clunkers" program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases.

The Transportation Department called congressional offices late Thursday to alert them to the decision to halt the program, which offered owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns of large backlogs in the system, prompting the suspension.

These are the people that want to ( will ) soon control your access to health care. Good luck, can't wait to hear the wailing when the statement is something along the lines of the government miscalulating how many people would need heard surgery.

_fullmetaljacket

i wonder how many cars showed up on a roll back from junk yards?

Entitlements and wealth distribution don't work. Will the inept fools in Washington never learn this simple principle.?

Everyone knows the government is a bunch of bureaucratic BOZOs that could not organize a company picnic. OF COURSE YOU DO NOT WANT THEM ADMINISTERING YOUR HEALTHCARE!!! Have you seen them do ANYTHING right lately. All they can even TRY to do is GIVE AWAY YOUR TAX MONEY and they can't even do that right. Put these BOZOs out of business.....IMMEDIATELY before they really hurt us.

We already have several of these cars at our dealership. Pretty nice cars too. You know what we get to do with them? Drain the oil, fill the engine block with liquid sand, and rev line them until they lock up (an auto techs dream!) The problem is these cars can be reused. This is one of the MOST wasteful programs I have ever seen. Our dealership ALONE has sent out four cars on this program at the cost of 14-18k dollars to taxpayers. INSANE!

mad_max

Yes, this is insane. Whatever amount of cars they sell, the buying will stop when the government money runs out and that will just through another lurch at the car makers. Bottom line is that we will waste a BUNCH of money to put a few cars on the road that might get 3 more miles per gallon. Then the money will run out and the buying will stop. Makes about as much sense as the rationale that our healthcare is too expensive but it will somehow be cheaper if we cover everyone. Horse pucky. There is not a Democrat in this country that passed basic mathematics in school. They just never quite got a grasp of the concept of income = outgo.

No cars should be showing up from junkyards because the trade-in vehicles must be titled and insured by the same owner for a year prior to the sale.

I was at a dealership today and they had been told that government officials are considering issuing 1099's to customers who have accepted clunker program funds.

concernmom

Oh man, I waited too long!!!

I've heard some dealers were really trying to screw people over on these deals and take advantage of the gov't. program.. Why am I not surprised.. GREED...

Jillian

Just imagine if this group of idiot's were in charge of making life and death decisions about your health care!!!

jebko

Did you go to the website and 'play around'? I did. My 1997 pickup with over 300,000miles was not eligible. Broken
gas gauge, crashed side and its gas milage was figured as if it was never driven... stats from '97 as compared to 2010 showed my vehicle would not qualify. My wife's 2002 with less than 80m miles made the 'trade'; excelant condition, leather, air etc. Guess I'll keep ole smoky... the govment says it's not a clunker!

jebko-Thanks for the laugh, your post made my day! SusieQ

This is CHANGE we can all believe in !

So every tax paying citizen has just paid their hard earned dollars to the goverment so they could give it to others to buy nicer cars, etc. and in a couple of weeks 96 million was spent - and you don't see this as socalism or wealth redistribution? The program barely got off the ground before it was broke and they now want to tackle health care for everyone who can't afford it either. ER's treat everyone no matter how poor and they even treat the illegals - enough is enough. Obama and Congress is taxing / borrowning / and spending us law abiding tax paying working class citizens to death.

Tujeez1

The government realized their mistake. They'll reopen the cash for clunkers program but only on government motors(GM) vehicles. Since they own most of the company, they're thinking they can make all of our tax money back on volume.

omnomnom

1,000,000,000 / 45,000 = 222,222, that means they can only confirm that 1/10th of cars alloted for this ridiculous program are confirmed sold. Shutting it down now seems a big premature to me. Buuuut alot of the new president's ideas seem remature. So do his off the cuff comments. And Biden's. Ugh.

themaninthemirror

This program, while it may be great for car dealers in the form of new vehicle sales, does not make sense from a finanacial standpoint. Who is funding this program? You and I! I would not pay my neighbor $4500 for his 25 year old gas guzzler pickup. But the Obama administration is forcing the American taxpayer to do exactly that. If we are going to be forced to pay for something, why not pay for something that makes sense, like education. After all, education lasts a lifetime, new cars start their depreciation immediately.

Barf Obama

Another Obama charm for your bracelet. This guy is a fool and his followers are dream chasers to the end.

TakeAstand

They just approved 2 billion more for this stupid waste of money and cars program!!!!!!! geesh 4 more years of this crap.... we should be afraid.... very afraid!!!! lol

TakeAstand

atctaylorb you should go to the press with this info and jebko should be a witness. They need to be outed and you guys may get a decent payment for yourselves from the press for your story to buy you a decent vehicle! lol
