Installed today, the new signs will make the intersection a three-way stop, according to a news release from the Richmond County Traffic Engineering Department. Until now only traffic on New Bailie Street had a stop sign.
Crews from the Georgia Department of Transportation closed Walton Way between 13th and New Bailie streets on Monday. The closure is part of the ongoing St. Sebastian Way extension project.
Planned as a fusion of existing downtown thoroughfares and new flyover ramps, the extension will move traffic from River Watch Parkway to the city's medical center - while avoiding downtown railroad tracks and stoplights. But to finish it, work crews must first realign the intersection of Walton Way and St. Sebastian Way to meet with the new road and then install utility lines.
An estimated 25,000 vehicles use that portion of Walton Way each day.
