A North Augusta mother is charged with assault with intent to kill after she attempted to kill herself and her two children with exhaust fumes from her car, according to authorities.
A police report says that 29-year-old Melissa Jeanne Sawyers of Dove Avenue taped a garden hose to the exhaust pipe of her car Monday and ran it through the backseat in an attempt to flood the vehicle with exhaust fumes.
Ms. Sawyers drove to 2110 Vireo Drive and told a witness that she and the children were leaving and would be watching over the witness after they were gone, according to the report.
When the witness asked her what she meant by that, Ms. Sawyers opened the back door and showed her the garden hose.
Ms. Sawyers' two children, a girl, 10, and a boy, 7, ran from the vehicle screaming that their mother was trying to kill them.
The children told police that their mother said they were going to go to sleep and wake up in heaven together. They also said Ms. Sawyers had driven the car around for a while before stopping at the incident address.
No medical services were needed for the children or for Ms. Sawyers.
Ms. Sawyers is charged with two counts of assault with intent to kill.

Umm, normally I am the first one on the 'hang em high' bandwagon, but I truely believe this one was suffering a psychotic break. To tell the children that they would go to sleep and wake up together in heaven and then tell the friend that they would watch over them when they are gone, that just screams insanity. Thank god she didn't succeed and that she stopped to say goodbye. Maybe in the back of her deluded mind, she really wanted help, for someone to stop her.
Rose I agree with you...I don't know anything about you personally but from some of your other posts regarding family and children I do believe she would learn real quick on the proper way to treat children after some time with you.
People do stuff to get attention everyday, but this is plum ridiculous. Why did she have to go and tell someone her intentions? ATTENTION GETTER. If you want to kill yourself, find a quiet place and do it; that is on you, but allow other people to make that choice for themselves. She had no right to play God by attempting to take the lives of these babies. I feel sorry for these poor children. I pray that they rebound mentally and physically. This is a classic case of the mother crying out for attention. MS Alexis - your comments seem to mean that Hawes was the first woman to ever kill her children. Hawes didn't start an epidemic; sadly this type of stuff has gone on for a long time. Don't forget the mother who left her kids in their car seats and let the car roll into the lake and the kids drowned; there are many more so let's not point the finger at one and say she started it. This lady needs some help and hopefully she'll get it.
Most suicide attempts are mentally disturbed individuals looking for help. If she really wanted to kill herself and her kids she would not have drove around a while and then stopped to let this witness know what she was doing. I agree the kids should never be put back into her custody and hopefully this woman will get the mental help she needs. Something is seriously wrong with a mother when she wants to harm her child...but then again I guess she thought she was doing them a favor. How distrubed is that!
You can look at her and see she has some type of mental or drug problem. Get her the help that she needs. Mental illness/addiction is a serious problem.

Many of you in your outrage and desire to say something on behalf of not killing the children have still gotten one thing twisted. You all say that it is fine if the mother wanted to kill herself, just so long as she didn't harm the kids. It's not fine if someone feels suicidal. This is a sad situation. The mom doesn't deserve to ever be in contact with any child again, but to say it would have been OK for her to kill herself is just as wrong as her trying to kill the kids along with herself.

There's some mud in the way this was written. Did she actually attempt it or just hint that she was going to? Did the children run to the witness screaming murder? Who called the police? Did the police catch her in the act? A lot seems to be wrapped-up in the word "intent". I know there's several policemen that live in that area. Maybe one of them was out in their yard mowing or something? It's just too sketchy. I guess the AC likes it that way. Thursdays breaking news that happened on Monday? She does look rather depressed, but who doesn't these days? Yes, a suicide attempt is a call for help. "29" may be a typo.
King James, I completely get where you are coming from, but that woman has to be responsible for own actions. She should know right from wrong and she should also know that if she is having suicidal tendacies, she needs to get help. She CHOSE to ignore the warning signs and she CHOSE to want to take her life and two other innocent lives that belonged to her kids. There's no excuse for that.

I went to school with her ex husband and attended birthday parties we were invited to through mutual friends and she's always been psychotic. I could not believe it when I got a phone call from several high school friends about her arrest. Thankfully, there was a witness who was keeping an eye out, b/c the children are very well behaved children. It's just unfortunate they have such a crazy mother.

Whyme, you're right that we respond so strongly. Obviously you have no children in your life or just might understand how sick it is to want to kill a child. You're darn right that we condemn this woman. She gets no sympathy from me. I just hope her children are ok. It's pretty traumatic to have the woman that gave birth to you, the woman that is supposed to care for and nurture you to turn around and try to kill you.

To all those that are angry with this lady -- Have you gone MAD? Anybody in their right mind would realize that this lady is sick and needs professional help. For God's sake, she told someone about it before she actually tried to do it. I'm just as judgemental as the next guy, but really, she doesn't deserve jail time; she deserves help.
