Haley Elise Van Pelt, 17, of Evans, was listed in critical condition in the Medical College of Georgia Hopsital Intensive Care Unit, according to MCG spokeswoman Denise Parrish.

Ms. Van Pelt was injured in a single-vehicle wreck on Hardy McManus Road at about 8:30 a.m.

Ms. Van Pelt, an honor student, is a member of Greenbrier High School’s marching and was headed to summer band camp at the time of the wreck, according to a school staff member.

She was trapped inside her late-model Saturn Ion for two hours after her vehicle ran off the road and slammed sideways into a large pine tree, said Columbia County sheriff’s Deputy Ty Mobley.

The tree caused Ms. Van Helt’s driver’s-side door to cave in, and Gold Gross Emergency Medical Service and Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue personnel worked to free her.

An ambulance transported her to the Grace Baptist Church parking lot, where she was flown to MCG by an Air Med helicopter ambulance.

Ms. Van Pelt, who was driving toward Washington Road on the 5500 block of Hardy-McManus Road, appeared to have driven off the edge of the roadway when she over corrected and lost control of the vehicle, said Deputy Greg Kernaghan.
