Gold Cross and Air Med staff load 17-year-old Haley Elise Vanpelt, of Evans, onto the Air Med helicopter Wednesday morning in the parking lot of Grace Baptist Church.

The car driven by Haley Elise Van Pelt, 17, of Evans, ran off Hardy-McManus Road about 8:30 a.m. and slammed sideways into a large pine tree, said Columbia County Sheriff’s Deputy Ty Mobley.

The tree crushed the driver’s side door, trapping Miss Van Pelt in the vehicle. It took two hours for emergency workers from Gold Cross Emergency Medical Service and Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue to free her from the late-model Saturn Ion sedan.

Miss Van Pelt was taken by ground ambulance to the nearby parking lot of Grace Baptist Church, and then flown by Air Med helicopter ambulance to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

Hospital spokeswoman Denise Parrish said Miss Van Pelt was listed in critical condition.

Deputy Greg Kernaghan said it appeared Van Pelt, who was alone in the vehicle and driving toward Washington Road on the 5500 block of Hardy-McManus, ran off the edge of the roadway and overcorrected, losing control of her vehicle.

A Greenbrier High School staffer said Miss Van Pelt, an honor student, is a member of the high school’s marching band and was on her way to summer band camp when the crash occurred.

I hope the youngster is going

I hope the youngster is going to be O.K. However I must say that when I hear of a single vehicle accident where it veered off the highway, the first thing I think of is "was she texting or trying to phone a friend"? What else can cause a person to take their eyes off the road? When will we ever learn that driving is a full time job requiring full attention. I really wonder why insurance companies don't invalidate any accident where it is proven the driver was on the phone or texting. But in conclusion, I really feel bad for the family having to go through this.

Dissman - You don't need to

Dissman - You don't need to speculate why this accident occurred. Please think of the family and their concern over their daughter. You could have started with the first sentence, left off your personal comments of blame, and skipped right to the last sentence. Put yourself in the "shoes" of the family, please.

Clyde1, dissman has every

Clyde1, dissman has every right to be concerned. Too many kids are doing this like the one riding next to me in the narrow construction lanes of I-20 while she was texting. Even if this young lady was doing the same, and no one has said she was, anyone's heart would go out to her and the family. However, had she run into someone instead of off the road she might be responsible for killing or severely injuring someone else no matter what the cause. Be assured insurance companies are now calling for phone records when investigating accidents (all ages).

I am close to this family

I am close to this family they are members of my church. I am praying for this family. She is close to my daughter, they are in the church youth group together. Right this very moment may they feel the presence of the Lord holding them tight. At a time like this the concern and prayers should be raised up. There is strength in prayer. Please, if you have any comments that do pertain to just this, remember that we have a child that is hurting, and a family that is hurting keep them to yourself if at all possible thanks. I love you Haley and Family. I will see you soon.

Just because a teenager is in

Just because a teenager is in an accident doesn't mean they were doing something to cause it! Especially on a road like hardy mcmanus. Instead of trying to accuse right now, we should be thinking of this family and my friend Haley as they go through this hard time.

Let the attacking of the ode commence, sounds like he is an attention seeker. Really, why would you post that, especially here in the deep south? And especially in this situation. Shame on you.

My thoughts and prayers go

My thoughts and prayers go out to this family. I pray that she is ok. As far as the texting crap, ya'll are heartless people! If you wanted to post a rant, you did it in the wrong section. Yes ghsfrshmn Hardy Mcmanus can be a danerous road. I think we should wait for further reports before we start placing blame. She could have just as easily been running a little late & driving a little to fast. Regardless, This teenager is in critical condition and needs more than anything our prayers.

I am Haley's cousin, Craig,

I am Haley's cousin, Craig, and our family is going through kind of a hard time over this. We have been told that she has a fractured pelvis and part of her neck is fractured near an artery. Her mom and dad haven't been able to see her because doctors are trying to stabilize her. I would just like to ask for her to be in everyone's prayers.
