Smoke prompts evacuation of Aiken building

AIKEN -- Authorities responded this morning to reports of smoke at USC Aiken’s Wellness Center, briefly having to evacuate the building.

Aiken Department of Public Safety Capt. Wendell Hall said the first reports of smoke occurred around 7 a.m. He said it appears part of a sauna in the wellness center overheated, causing the smoke and charring a wall.

There were no injuries or major damage, and firefighters were able to get the scene under control quickly, the captain said.
