Autopsy scheduled for teen

  • Follow Latest News

An autopsy will be performed today on a teenage boy who drowned Saturday while swimming in Thurmond Lake at Wildwood Park near Appling, Columbia County Chief Deputy Coroner Bonnie Holloway said today.

Christopher Smith, 17, of Ventana Drive, Evans, a Greenbrier High student, was swimming with three friends, said Columbia County deputy coroner Bonnie Holloway.

“He just kind of went out above his head, and he panicked,” she said.

Emergency services received a call about 3:10 p.m. of a possible drowning, according to dive team spokeswoman Honey Shore. A diver with the Columbia County Emergency Management Agency’s Dive Rescue Recovery Team found the body about 4:15 p.m., Ms. Shore said.

I am heartbroken for his

I am heartbroken for his family and friends. I did not know Chris but do know the friends with him that day and know they would of saved him if they could of. They were teenagers just having fun at the lake that turned into a tragedy. I also have a teenage son and worry ever time he walks out the door. This will haunt these kids for a long time. Instead of trying to blame open your hearts and pray. His friends and family need this now.

My daughter attends

My daughter attends Greenbrier and was friends with Chris. She had nothing but good things to say about him. She will miss celebrating their senior year. I agree with 'concerned mom', we all worry. Our deepest sympathy to his family, and loved ones. God Bless.

My daughter also attends

My daughter also attends Greenbrier and always had a great story to share about Chris. He was a great guy, classmate and friend and it's so sad to hear of his untimely death. We will all miss Chris and be praying for his family going through this unbelievable ordeal and loss. We loved your son and he brought joy to everyone he came into contact with. God Bless You.

Dear Chris, We have known

Dear Chris, We have known each other now for 4 years, and it hurts to see you go but I know God chose you to be with Him, and it was your time to be called into where I want to meet you again someday! It hurts to know you're gone. My myspace page is filled with pics of you! I am going to really miss you! I remember the first day I met you. We were in the gym and when you broke your leg and I would carry your books! WOW time goes by so fast! You will be missed highly though! To his parents especially mom I love you! You might not remember me but I use to call your house and talk to Chris all the time and his little sister was in like third grade she has truly grown! I wish you were here Chris. School is going to be so boring without your presence it's going to be so lame lol!!!!!!!! But know this I love you very much Love,
your bestie

I do not know this young man

I do not know this young man or his family but any senseless loss of a young life is tragic and my heart goes out to his family. From the postings written here apparently this was a fine young man who was very well thought of and hopefully that will be of some comfort to his family. I am happy to say that I did not see "Williston's post before it was removed but whoever that person is, I would think long and hard before I posted anything else to this site if I were you. However, we all must remember that unfortunately there will always be someone who is small enough to try to inject racial overtones and hatred into any situation. The overwhelming sentiment expressed in this forum in regard to this young man's tragic loss is uplifting and appropriate, so don't dwell on the ignorance of one person because he probably already has enough problems just living with who he is. Give him what he deserves: TOTAL DISREGARD. R.I.P. young Chris and God bless.

We lost our son 5/30/2009

We lost our son 5/30/2009 his name was Stephen Fishel it was also on a Saturday. It will forever change my life. It is the hardest thing any parent can and will ever go through. My son was just being a teenager having fun also.I know everyone grieves differently and you will go through a roller coaster of emotions. I know at first I did not want to hear words of faith or encouragement because i was mad and upset. No parent is ready for this,we are prepared to go first. But as time goes on I realized that faith can help to heal wounds and God knows what it is like to lose a son. I have not felt anything God has not felt first.
my strength comes from the Lord, Family, Curtis Baptist Family and friends. focus on the time you had with him. The love ,relationships and memories. I can not be weak because that is not what Stephen would want. I have to be strong for his brother and remember that I will see him again. I will remember you and your loss in my prayers and thoughts. Do not let other peoples opinions get you down, that is all they are. God bless and will bless each and everyone of you. Melanie Fishel
