Nathaniel Smith, 24, of Walnut Street has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to jail records.

The killing occurred about 4:35 a.m. at Riverside Inn, 954 5th St., according to a Richmond County Sheriff's Office dispatcher.

The victim has been identified as Gary Bernard Gregory, 46, of East Taylor Street, said Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald.

Mr. Gregory was shot in the head, Mr. McDonald said, based on preliminary findings. His body was found by an acquaintance who was visiting his room at the motel, according to the Sheriff's Office.

He was declared dead at 5:40 a.m. Mr. Gregory's body is now at the GBI Crime Lab on Phinizy Road, where an autopsy will likely be performed Sunday, Mr. McDonald said.

Deputies arrested Mr. Smith about 11 a.m. when they raided a home in the 200 block of Aragon Drive. Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the shooting, but Mr. McDonald said robbery is a possibility. He said relatives of Mr. Gregory said he had a large sum of money on him.

Once upon a time, it was a decent place to stay. I stayed there as a teenager when St. Paul's church hosted the annual youth convention for our denomination in Georgia. I remembre those days fondly. It sure has come down in the world.

If greedy hotel/motel owners

If greedy hotel/motel owners would stop renting to drug dealers, prostitutes and the like, this type of crime would lessen considerably.

Sure enana03, it's ALWAYS

Sure enana03, it's ALWAYS somebody else's fault. Typical response from a liberal though. Let's see YOU stand at the front desk and give every person wanting to rent a room a 30 minute questionaire about their life history and what they intend to do in the room. I'm sick of people who have NEVER run a business calling business owners "greedy". Are you going to call Obama "greedy" for his takeover of Chrysler and GM? I doubt it. What about his intention for government to take over health care? Isn't that being "greedy". Damn liberals are nothing but hypocrites.

I have to wonder what the man was doing there with a large sum of money (unless for a drug deal).

Well, I hate that someone has been killed by a criminal but I doubt the victim's wad of money was from his Obama stimulus check.

humbleopinion you have

humbleopinion you have contradicted yourself greatly. You go from "it's ALWAYS somebody else's fault" indicating that you feel people are no longer taking responsibility for their actions to a murder that took place in Augusta, Ga being the fault of Obama and his stimulus plan. What's up with that?

Motels have always been a hot

Motels have always been a hot bed for killings -- and most of the time, those with daytime jobs have been doing the most killing at motels and hotels. Case in point, Amanda Rodrigues.

Drug dealers, on the other

Drug dealers, on the other hand, do most of their killings in vacant homes and crackhouses.

As I've said over and over ,"humbleopinion is an [filtered word]" Ido believe he is so stupid that the only reason for ANYTHING is Obama's fault. Get a life [filtered word].

Great Job RCSO on catching a

Great Job RCSO on catching a murdering thug in such a timely manner. These violent criminals are really out of control lately but if they would just take a minute to read the paper they would see that 98% of them are getting caught for their violent behavior in the CSRA and generally very quickly. Now, if we can only ensure that our judicial system will put them to death or away for the remainder of their life without parole.

Well said, michelle026. We

Well said, michelle026. We must all remember that all victims and criminals are someone's son, daughter, brother, cousin, ect. The hurt extends far beyond the intial person. What went wrong in their life can not be changed, but maybe society's reaction to it can. For instance, where was the needed help years ago??? Penny wise; pound foolish for not having programs in place to stop the madness early.
