SC town councilman charged with assault

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A South Carolina town councilman has been arrested on an assault charge after a confrontation with another council member.

The State reported that Batesburg-Leesville Councilman Steve Cain was arrested Wednesday and charged with simple assault after a run-in with Councilman Todd O'Dell after Monday's council meeting.

O'Dell says Cain shoved him as Cain tried to confront town manager Joan Taylor.

Cain says the arrest was "a setup." He says O'Dell jumped in front of him and he grabbed him to move him aside. Cain says the arrest came in retaliation for his outspokenness.

O'Dell says Cain has been "increasingly belligerent" and has made baseless accusations of mismanagement.

Cain's trial in magistrate court is set for Aug. 12.

This is ridiculous. A shove?

This is ridiculous. A shove? Why is O'Dell being allowed to waste the court's time on such a completely frivolous matter? He sounds like a tattletale weenie.

This is being settled in

This is being settled in magistrates court. There's a line that doesn't need to be crossed in these meetings and "jumping in line and shoving" still leads to more serious assaults if it's not stopped right away, just like in the 6th grade. Both men should be reprimanded by the court and the town manager, or whoever has the final say in the council meetings.
