Hundreds of the members of the Greater Augusta Association of Realtors attended the official opening of the Roy Road office today.

Construction on the $1.6 million building started in August, financed through saving for the project over the last five years, said Tom Horner, the association’s building committee leader.

The highlight of the 6,500-square-foot building is the 100-seat training center.

“We have to have continuing education, most of us that are not grandfathered in. We have state and national instructors that come in here and teach the classes,” said association President Nita Sawyer.

With the additional office space, the association no longer needs to rent facilities in order to conduct the training, she said. The association has more than 1,300 members.

The office contains a computer room for new agent training.

“We tried to design this so that no matter what size broker you are – mom and pop to a large one – that you had the facilities to take care of this,” Mr. Horner said.

The training was done in-house before. “But no one had a computer, they watched a video tape,” Mr. Horner said.

With its location off Wheeler Road near Interstate 20 and Bobby Jones Expressway, it is easily assessable for agents in south Augusta.
