FOREST PARK, Ga. — A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after police say he shot himself in the stomach.

Lt. Rebecca Brown with the Clayton County police department says the boy found the gun while his mother was asleep Sunday night at their Forest Park apartment. Brown said investigators believe the shooting was self-inflicted.

She said the mother likely will not be charged in the incident.

Police are not releasing the boy's name. He was rushed to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston after the shooting.
