8-year-old SC girl shot twice in head, killed

CHESNEE, S.C. - A man put an 8-year-old girl in a headlock Wednesday and shot her to death, then shot himself in the stomach, authorities said.

The girl's father is dating Ricky Lee Blackwell's estranged wife. Spartanburg County deputies said Blackwell shot the girl twice in the driveway of a home where he had taken her and his estranged wife to swim and play. The home is in Chesnee, about 60 miles southwest of Charlotte, N.C.

Several adults and children saw the shooting and pointed officers toward Blackwell, investigators said.

Blackwell shot himself as police closed in. He was taken to a hospital but his condition wasn't released.

The coroner's office identified the girl as Heather Brooke Center of Woodruff.

Investigators said they weren't sure of Blackwell's motive.

"I don't know where you can go in the mind to justify shooting a child," said Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright. "I don't understand how you can get so angry."

The sheriff said Blackwell, 50, has a long criminal record. He was charged with murder and kidnapping. No one answered his phone Wednesday night.

"As soon as they called his name, I knew him," Wright said. "I'd heard that boy's name before."

Amen TinkerbellFan. They should have finished him off on the spot and saved us a lot of money. He doesn't deserve to live after what he did to this child. She had a long life ahead of her and now it was ended all too soon by this sick pyscho.

Such a shame that he didn't

Such a shame that he didn't start out by shooting himself in the head! My condolences to all the families left to deal with the aftermath of this senseless violence.

My condolences to the family.

My condolences to the family. I do wonder why this estranged wife was having her violent, distrubed husband taking her anywhere, whereby putting her boyfriend's child in danger, fatal danger as it turned out to be. This angers me because in society today we have adults playing games that not only put them in danger or harms way, but anyone around them is also put in danger. When innocent children pay the price for the choices these iresponsible people make, I have no patienace for them.....the estranged wife needs to be held accountable too for what has happened to this child that was in her care and supposedly protection.

I like the fact that many

I like the fact that many criminals are starting to shoot themselves. I wish they would all just shoot themselves before they hurt other ppl.

Blaming the victim. Why do

Blaming the victim. Why do we have to blame the mother who didn't shoot the child in the head, rather than the abuser who did.

My condolences go to the family of this child. It was a senseless murder and they should put him under the jail without benefit of trial.
