Concerned about the future of cancer research at Medical College of Georgia in the face of current and looming state budget cuts, Georgia Sen. Ed Tarver is looking for assurances.

Mr. Tarver, D-Augusta, sent an e-mail Tuesday to House Appropriations Chairman Ben Harbin, R-Evans, and Senate Appropriations Chairman Jack Hill, R-Reidsville, asking for a meeting Friday.

Mr. Tarver wants them to hear from MCG Cancer Center Director Khapil Bhalla about the impact on the center and the need for more secure funding. The school receives $5 million from the state in a special funding initiative for cancer research that was briefly threatened during the last legislative session before it was restored.

“To the extent that MCG is affected, yes I am affected” by the cuts, Dr. Bhalla said.

As state revenues continue to lag, Mr. Tarver said, there is “more and more discussion” about a special session being called to institute another round of budget cuts, possibly in mid- to late August or September.

We don't need a special

We don't need a special session to handle budget cuts. These lawmakers just want the perks and the per diem for no work of any value. The governor's office is already staffed and is quite capable of executing budget cuts. Let the General Assembly wait till next year!

Cancer research is no more

Cancer research is no more than a free ride at the fair. Big money for small people that study nothing but the next fat paycheck.

First you give to this bunch

First you give to this bunch for years, and the Federal and State governments give them more and then when you need the results of their research, you declare bankruptcy for it. Oh I forgot they sell their results to the pharmacy companies who charge exorbidant prices to us givers, unless we are overseas. Yeah we need to keep funding this research that has been on-going for my entire 64 years on this earth. When will we wake up?
