Students in first through eighth grades take the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests, but the test takes on particular importance in grades, 3, 5 and 8. Third-graders must pass reading and fifth- and eighth-graders must pass reading and math to automatically move to the next grade.
The CRCT results are also important to schools. The results are a major factor in determining if a school makes adequate yearly progress as defined by No Child Left Behind.
