WASILLA, Alaska – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday she is resigning from office at the end of the month, raising speculation that she would focus on a run for the White House in the 2012 race.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate made the surprise announcement from her home in suburban Wasilla on Friday morning. She said she would step down July 26 but didn't announce her plans.

"Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose," Palin said in a statement released by her office.

"It is my duty to always protect our great state. With that in mind, my family and I determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things, so that this administration, with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future, can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success," she said.

Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the governor's picnic in Fairbanks at the end of the month, Palin spokesman Dave Murrow said.

Palin was first elected in 2006 on a populist platform. But her popularity has waned as she waged in partisan politics following her return from the presidential campaign. Her term would have ended in 2010.

No one like Palin resigns unless someone found something really damaging and gave her an ultimatum.

coolette

Let's put a common sense WOMAN in the white house!!!!

0430

georgiasouthern

How many of you Sara haters would go through what the biased and bigoted news media have put her through? How many of you would have been gracious in your admonishions to the foul mouthe jokesters who have denigated your children, especially when it concerns your sensitive 13 year old daughter and an infant with Downs Syndrome? I seriously doubt any of you would have handled those issues as graciously as Sarah Palin has, and that speaks volumes for her character and sensitivities towards others who need our ADULT protection. I hope that she is going to run for the Presidency; and if she does, she will most likely make it to the Oval Office. At least she can intelligently speak of pertinent issues and put things in the right perspective; she knows HOW to govern and understands the complexities of the issues we are currently facing. The big O has no clue and certainly does not have what it takes to govern the United States.

I don't blame her for giving up her governorship. I hope she is doing this to prepare to run for president in 2012. She will surely have my vote should she get the nomination. Obama has shown what a sorry president, man, leader ect he is in the short time he has been in the White House. I only pray that God will not allow him to destroy this country before the next four years is up. Some of you thought Bush was bad but at least he cared for this country and for ALL the people. Mr Obama cares not for this country nor for the people. He cares about having a good time, taking his wife on dates in the jet, spending the tax payers money, seeing how close he can get this country to communism. You bet she will have my vote and more if I were allowed to vote more than once. I guess if God can't get us to pray one way, he'll get us on our knees another way. We best listen to HIM.

Don't blame the Dems, Republicans have been doing a number on Palin the past few weeks.

jackmaple

Sounds like a senate run--will win too!!!!!!

jackfruitpaper833

McCain messed up her life for good by selecting her as his running mate, he should be blamed for her political demise. No one even heard of her until he brought her on the scene.

It seems a large number of language arts students reside on these boards. So many seem to be practicing their creative writing skills with epitaphs.

PM-S you are just jelous because she is so hot and you are so, uh, well, u kn ow!!!

Another Republican Surprise! What will happen next!
Sarah Palin has shown the world how she would react under pressure - bow to it. The nervousness and disjointed syntax of her resignation speech displayed her inability to govern and be a spokesperson for America in the national arena. She sounded like Nixon when he told the press that they wouldn't have him to kick around anymore. Let us not let Alaska’s loss be America’s future.

sjgraci

One more radical right wing religious nut-case goes down. Scandal, i.e. Ted Stevens house built by cronies, soon to follow...

convertedsoutherner

Anything would be better than the future we have now.

Send her to Texas to be with the other loser!

dont live there anymore

We, the Republicans surely need more Senators and let us hope she is one of them. She has several months to get her money and campaign act together. I cannot believe the really nasty remarks made here about this woman.

dani

Palin has the libs running for cover. Now the rumor is that a big scandal will break (that story is from MSNBC-Dan nobody). A a bunch of turkeys. Not a one of them has made it to governor of a sate and they can't stand to think a woman just might be smarter than most men. Ho-hum. It will go away tomorrow when they continue celebrating the death of M Jackson. (Yeah, I know what I said.)

jack234

I think its really good that ellie mae has resigned to spend more time with her family and future son-in-law. Good thing she isn't vice-president and have to resign to patch up things at home. HELLO! HELLO!

Huggybear30909

If she were to run for president right now against NOBAMA, I feel like she would win over that worthless Idiot. She has more common sense and more loyalty than he ever had PERIOD. As they say in Saudi. Big Pile of Camel Dung is more useful than a man like BO.
