A 35-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 1 in North Augusta today, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
Gregory A. Maree was traveling south toward Augusta on Highway 1 at about 9:45 a.m. when he left the roadway in a curve near the Cheap Cigarrettes store, the coroner said. The 1995 Honda struck two abandoned, above-ground gas tanks, which were empty, and caught fire.
Mr. Maree was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple body trauma. He was not wearing a seat belt, Mr. Carlton said.
The accident is being investigated by the North Augusta Department of Public Safety and the Aiken County Coroner's Office. Toxicology is pending.
The fatal crash was the 20th in Aiken County this year.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time.
Not sure how they could determine cause of death at the scene.......he was burned beyond recognition. I thought an autopsy would be in order.
Once again the words "the victim was NOT wearing a seatbelt" are in the story of a fatal crash.
Wake up people! Seatbelts DO save lives.
Humble I really do not think he would have survived this if the car caught on fire on impact if he was wearing a seat belt
A burn is a type of trauma
