The thermometer hit that mark about 2:29 p.m., making today the hottest day of the year so far, said Dave Schuetrum, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in West Columbia. The record high for the day is 104 degrees set in 1952.
The highest temperature recorded for June was 105 degrees in 1928.
The normal average temperature of the month is 91 degrees, Mr. Schuetrum said. The highs for the last 20 days have exceeded that.
He expects temperatures to hit 100 again Sunday.
The heat index for today reached 105 degrees. Prolonged exposure in those conditions can lead to muscle cramps, sunstroke or heat exhaustion, Mr. Schuetrum warned.
People should just drink lots of fluid, and try to stay in air conditioning if they can, he said.
