Murder suspect who fled is in jail

An Aiken County murder suspect who fled from an Augusta hospital June 14 only to return a few days later is in jail.

Terrence Riley, 40, of Columbia, was taken to the Richmond County jail at about 5:51 p.m. today, according to a sheriff’s office jail committal.

Police believe Mr. Riley was one of four men who fatally shot Jerry Tyler in a Ridge Spring home invasion on June 12. Mr. Riley was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital after police say one of his partners accidentally shot him in his leg, lower abdomen and chest.

Police said at the time that he was in critical condition and that they believed he might not survive. A guard wasn’t placed at Mr. Riley’s hospital door because of his condition. Two days after he was admitted to MCG, police say, Mr. Riley walked out of the hospital to take a smoke break and left the area. He returned to the hospital emergency room a few days later to get pain medication and was spotted by an Aiken Public Safety officer and taken back into custody.

Once the extradition process is complete, he could be taken to the Aiken County Detention Center.
