AIKEN -- An Aiken slaying suspect who walked out of a hospital more than a week ago, returning a couple of days later, remains in an Augusta intensive care unit, according to police.

Aiken County sheriff’s Capt. Troy Elwell said today that he’s not aware of any changes in the condition of Terrence Riley, 40, of Columbia, who police say was one of four men who fatally shot Jerry Tyler in a Ridge Spring home invasion on June 12.

Mr. Riley had been taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital after police say one of his partners accidentally shot him in his leg, lower abdomen and chest. Police said at the time that he was in critical condition, and they believed he might not survive his wounds.

A guard wasn’t placed at Mr. Riley’s hospital door because of his condition. Two days after he was admitted to MCG, police say, Mr. Riley walked out of the hospital to take a smoke break and left the area.

He returned to the hospital emergency room a few days later to get pain medication and was spotted by an Aiken Public Safety officer and taken back into custody.

Aiken authorities say they are now waiting on the hospital to give a medical clearance so Mr. Riley can be incarcerated. At that point, Richmond County deputies would take him to the Richmond County jail, where he could then waive or fight extradition.

Once the extradition process is complete, he could be taken to the Aiken County Detention Center.

Let's see, if one deputy per day has watched the suspect, you have to ask yourself, was he supposed to be in my neighborhood? Police don't grow on trees, and the one that is at the hospital all day isn't doing what he should be doing. Just my take on the matter. Good thing is that I live in S.C. so it all works out for me.

The Aiken County taxpayer

The Aiken County taxpayer will be paying his share E2432. Even though he is here in Georgia. Especially his medical bills. Better get that check out.
