COLUMBIA — South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. is seeking a rate increase to improve and maintain its infrastructure for natural gas customers.

The Columbia-based utility filed paperwork Monday with Public Service Commission for an increase that averages nearly 5.7 percent for residential customers.

Documents indicate the typical monthly residential bill would go up about $2.78 to $51.77. Small and medium commercial customers would pay an extra 2.5 percent and large commercial and industrial customers would pay another 1.8 percent.

The increase planned to go into effect in November would generate about $13 million for the utility, which has about 309,000 natural gas customers in South Carolina.
