A Martinez teen was being held without bond this morning in connection to a May 23 wreck that severely injured a Lincolnton teen.
Ashley Teeters, 16, was charged with serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving and violation of a Class D license in connection with a wreck that left Tyler Epps, 16, paralyzed.
Columbia County Juvenile Court Judge Doug Flanagan denied granting her bond.
This is a serious charge, Judge Flanagan said of the license restriction that prohibits newly licensed drivers from having non-family passengers for the first six months. The court is always concerned about violations of a Class D license.
Police said Ms. Teeters was driving about 90 mph on Ray Owens Road in Appling just before 2 p.m. when she lost control of her vehicle while navigating a curve. The Mercury Sable flipped several times and landed upside down in a ditch, leaving both her and the front seat passenger, Ian McGahee, 15, of Lincolnton, with minor injuries.
Tyler, who was riding in the back seat, was airlifted to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he is in fair condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
None of the teens were wearing seat belts.
Ms. Teeters also is charged with shoplifting for attempting to steal several clothing items from Kohls in Evans on Monday. She also faces a March 30 simple battery charge and May 6 unruly juvenile charge.
She will be booked into the Columbia County Detention Center today, then be transferred to the Regional Youth Detention Center.
