ATHENS, GA. -- A major University of Georgia computer center shut down for about three hours Friday afternoon, knocking out many university Web sites hosted on servers in the center and interrupting e-mail service on campus.

UGA computer technicians and engineers restored the system by about 6:15 p.m., said Bert DeSimone, communications officer for UGA's Enterprise Information Technology Services.

The outage was caused by a "power anomaly" in an EITS data center, But engineers had not yet decided what caused the electrical problem, DeSimone said.
