In a vote taken by conference call this morning, the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame's board of directors approved a request by a volunteer group to enter the Reynolds Street golf gardens Saturday morning to mow and weed whack its most visible areas.

The board has 11 members, with six needed for a quorum. Eight members took part in the call, and the vote was unanimous.

Anthony Esposito, founder and organizer of Growing Augusta the GreenWay, requested of the state last week that he be allowed on the property Saturday to do some badly-needed maintenance, hopefully bringing the property within the parameters of the city's nuisance ordinance, which state-owned property is exempt from.

Mr. Esposito said if he didn't get permission, he would instead stage a protest.

The Attorney General's Office said accommodating him would take a board vote, which presented a problem with the next meeting not being until June 25. Chairman Bryan Persons, of Macon, organized the conference call earlier this week.

Mr. Persons said golf hall Marketing Director Robyn Jarrett will unlock the gates for Mr. Esposito on Saturday, and all volunteers must sign waivers and releases of liability.

"I feel like all our interests are protected," he said.
