WASHINGTON, Ga. — Officials in Wilkes County will use a $12.7 million loan to renovate a 25-bed hospital that's one of few in the region.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development officials have committed to insure a mortgage loan to Wills Memorial Hospital as part of the Federal Housing Administration's hospital mortgage insurance program.

The hospital will replace its existing inpatient medical/surgical unit, pharmacy, respiratory therapy area, outpatient specialty clinic, and renovate the emergency department.

The hospital is located more than 25 miles from the nearest inpatient health care facility, and provides critical services and access to care. Since 2003, HUD has issued commitments to 15 different critical access hospitals all across the United States.
