Earphones linked to teen killed while walking on train track

A 17-year-old Statham, Ga., boy who might have been listening to music on earphones, was killed Saturday when hit from behind by a freight train as he walked on the tracks, police said Monday.

Joshua Gene Whitten was walking about 10 a.m. toward Winder on the CSX tracks that run parallel to Georgia Highway 8 when he got hit by a train carrying shipping containers, said Barrow County sheriff's Investigator Matt Guthas.

The engineer operating the westbound train used his emergency brake and blew his horn several times to warn the teenager, but the teen did not move off the tracks and the train could not stop in time, said Gary Sease, a spokesman for CSX Transportation.

"The investigation has revealed that the victim may have been listening to a digital music device before the collision," Guthas wrote in a news release Monday.

I wondered about that. How

I wondered about that. How could the teen not hear the whistle? They are really, really loud. The road vibrate when they are going by, so the tracks has to be booming with vibrations. It is a shame to die so young. The family has my sympathies.
