MACON – A victim advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving's middle Georgia chapter has resigned after Bibb County Sheriff Jerry Modena testified for a woman charged with DUI.

Jackie Wilder, whose daughter was killed by a drunken driver in 2006, said Friday that she became disheartened that the state group's executive director did not take a stronger stand after Sheriff Modena testified during Kay Gilbert's trial March 17. Ms. Gilbert's husband was campaign finance manager during Sheriff Modena's re-election bid.

A Modena spokesman, Lt. George Meadows, said the sheriff could not be reached for comment and is not expected to return to the office until late next week.

Ms. Gilbert was convicted by a jury and sentenced to a day in jail, a year of probation, community service and fined $1,000.

not the right thing to do but

not the right thing to do but I'd hurt the idiot down that did that to my daughter and make him pay "my own way"....won't be a pretty sight either! Poor lady, not only was justice not served but now she has a dead child. Sounds like he got a nice little slap on the wrist

We don't know the details.

We don't know the details. As usual, I suspect there is more to the story.

Having a MADD mother resign

Having a MADD mother resign is not REALLY a big deal. MADD is only a well paying job for the officers!!! I once wrote 3 e-mails to their website asking why the say they advocate do alcohol for drivers and yet do not oppose alcohol sales in EVERY conveinence store or gas station on the interstate.......THEY NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED THE QUESTIONS OR ADDRESSED THE POTENTIALLY SERIOUS MATTER!! Why would people buy beer while getting gas...are they going to buy it because it's cheaper and save it until they get home....or drink it? Could their inactivity be because there's a lot of money involved?

I have always wondered why

I have always wondered why the only thing MADD does is put out drunk driving awareness, I am wondering what else they do. I wanted to join, but what do they really do? Thier heart may be in the right place but the laws have not changed to punish drunk drivers especially repeat offenders. I thought this organization was to make a difference. A difference would be to protest for as long as it takes to get those in power to change the laws and punishment for these [filtered word] drunk drivers. When they do that, I'll join. As of right now, a drunk driver has no real punishment, even the shame doesn't bother them!!!! They lose thier license, pay a fine and still drive drunk again anyway. They need to be put out in front of thier work, homes, schools etc with signs saying I drive drunk becuase I could care less if I kill your family!!! on the first dui, after that every dui is 3-5 in jail, after 3 duis, you are locked up for good, someone has to protect the public from you!! I mean why is dui a fricken misdemeanor, it should be a felony, and three stikes you are out, that should go for every criminal!! I'll pay higher taxes to build more jails to lock these [filtered word]'s up!!!!!!
