An Emanuel County farmer was killed Sunday when his tractor overturned.

According to a news release from the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office, Capers Phillips, of Lyons, Ga., was killed about mid-afternoon. There was no sign of foul play.

Witnesses told the Sheriff's Office that Mr. Phillips had been working on his pond dam for several weekends.

When relatives left the house just after lunch, they said he was in the barn working.

When he did not come home after dark, relatives said they started looking for him. Heavy rains in the area also hampered the search.

They eventually found Mr. Phillips at the base of the pond dam where the tractor had flipped, pinning him beneath it.

The Emanuel County Sheriff's Office, Coroner's Office, EMS & Rescue and Oak Park Fire Department all responded to the scene, but it took rescuers two hours to free Mr. Phillips, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is always sad to hear about a death, but even sadder when it is the death of a true American that is the backbone of this great country. May God be with you and with the other farmers of this country.
