The 972-acre park, on land owned by the Army Corps of Engineers and leased to Columbia County, includes camping and day-use areas, along with a major multi-lane boat launch ramp and fishing tournament parking area along Thurmond Lake.
The road and entrance improvements are among the first steps in a proposed, long-range master plan that over a period of many years could include $21 million in cabins, new beaches, a mega-playground, welcome center, lodge and possibly even a waterfront amphitheater.
Financing for the entrance road improvements is already secured through local options sales tax funds. The current park entrance is near a blind hill and has caused traffic concerns, especially during major events.
The park is scheduled to re-open June 18, barring any unforeseen delays, Mr. Bell said.
