Suspect named, 2 dead after apartment altercation

Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has named a suspect in the double stabbing murder at a south Augusta apartment complex early this morning.

Joshua Bernard Ferguson, 52, will be charged with two counts of murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime in the slayings of Jesse Albert Haynes, 42, and Rodney Antrone Crane, 27.

Both men suffered multiple stab wounds and were pronounced dead at 5 a.m. in apartment A-5 at Glenwood II Apartments off of Lumpkin Road, said Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen.

A friend of the deceased men stopped by the apartment to check on the two men. Upon his arrival, he found the two men in a pool of blood.

When deputies arrived to the scene they found a trail of blood leading from apartment A-5 to apartment A-7, which is directly above the apartment, said Richmond County Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Peebles.

Richmond County SWAT had to force entry into the apartment A-7 where they found a significant amount of blood and Mr. Ferguson barricaded in the bathroom of the apartment. After deputies talked to the men through the door for several minutes, Mr. Ferguson surrendered.

He was treated for minor cuts to one of his hands at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics.

Mr. Ferguson is a convicted felon, who is currently on parole for a voluntary manslaughter charge in 1984.

More details about the number of stab wounds to the victims will be announced after autopsies are complete at the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta.
