Lasting between three months to a year, the moratorium was requested last week by commission Chairman Ron Cross during a Development Services Committee meeting. The intent of the moratorium is to give county officials time to revise ordinances regarding multi-family housing.
Revisions might include maximum density, parking regulations and design characteristics, according to county documents.
Mr. Cross request followed much recent debate concerning site plan revisions for Marshall Square. Developers for the 47-acre property on Evans Town Center Boulevard had proposed an apartment density far greater than the 14 units per acre as allowed by law in other zonings. Commissioners shot down that portion of the revisions during a May 5 meeting and the developers have since suggested that they might abandon the project.
The debate highlighted the need for greater clarity in the law, especially where planned unit developments, like Marshall Square, are concerned, Mr. Cross said.
The moratorium is listed as a consent item on tonights meeting agenda, which means it is lumped in with numerous other items previously approved in committee. Typically, consent items are all approved with a single vote.
Tonights meeting will be held at the Evans Government Center, 630 Ronald Reagan Drive, Evans.
