Gay rights advocates to protest SC date violence bill

  • Follow Latest News

COLUMBIA — Gay rights advocates are protesting the exclusion of gay and lesbian relationships from a South Carolina bill meant to curb teen dating violence.

Democratic Reps. Gilda Cobb-Hunter of Orangeburg and Ken Kennedy of Greeleyville are among those criticizing last week's vote in the House to bar any mention of gays from the proposed program for middle and high school students.

They plan to join members of the South Carolina Progressive Network and the local chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays on Tuesday to protest the amended bill. It requires another vote before moving to the Senate.

Republican Greg Delleney of Chester said he pushed for the change because he believes it would lead to school officials teaching children about same-sex relationships.

If I didn't respect them,

If I didn't respect them, would they still be my friends? They know how we feel 100%. My husband let them know years ago when they hit on him the first time, and I let my best friend know when she hit on me. Thats was the end of it. a difference of views, almost like the fact we have different tastes in music, she dont blare the country when I'm around, I don't blare the rap. I like some country, she likes some rap, but we just leave it out of the equation when together and just hang out as friends and listen to old rock!!!!!! Maybe I just have really mature friends. You can disagree without hating people, if you can't grasp that concept there is nothing more I can do to help you get it!!

I don't pretend to know what

I don't pretend to know what exactly this bill is about. It sounds like it is to teach kids against personal violence by people they know or are in relationships with. Teaching kids to respect one another and not to violate their personal freedom should be pretty simple whether is 2 boys, 2 girls, or a boy and a girl. Sexual orientation should really have nothing to do with teaching kids to respect others' personal freedom and their right to not be physically abused.

Yeah, sure, TakeAstand, "some

Yeah, sure, TakeAstand, "some of my best friends are gay". Right. I guarantee they don't consider you to be their friend, not really. You think they don't pick up on your concern about them hitting on you and trying to "influence" your son? I know--you said they respect you enough not to do those things--but the very fact that you'd think that a possibility proves you view them differently from your straight acquaintances.

StandingTallOneLastTime your

StandingTallOneLastTime your 10:52 post is just absurd. I would suggest you re-read the Constitution. Your narrow minded thought process just trampled all over individuals' freedoms. You can choose to believe in whatever you want and say it all you want thanks to our Constitution. However gay people, religious nut job people, athesists, green haired people, etc all have the right to live without persecuation of narrowed minded hacks like yourself as long as they are not breaking the law and 2 gay people holding hands or kissing in a park isn't breaking a law. You may not like it but that is tough crap. I don't happen to like the people who accost me in public and start shouting bible passages but that is their right.

None one said its illegal but

None one said its illegal but just as its tough crap when they kiss in the park, its tough crap when we get up and walk way or shield our son from seing it. It doesn't mean we are hateful bigots because we have a different opinion on the subject. I'm just tired of gay supporters saying anyone who doesn't condone gays is a hateful bigot, thats just not true and makes them look more like the hateful bigots!!!!! Tha's my point. And the way it relates to the bill is the Rep thinks the bill may open the door to it being taught in the schools. I think a class should be taught to tolerate all people who are different than them, and teach against violence, not just pointing out a specific group.

Actually parents should teach

Actually parents should teach their kids to tolerate and not be violent, etc. Schools should teach basic and advanced academic skills but in our land where people no longer believe that they are responsible for themselves, their actions, and their offspring, the government just wants to control more aspects of everyone's life.

If there is truely some

If there is truely some tangible physical reason, such as a genetic marker, other than merely a lifestyle choice for homosexuals, how come there are any left? Every other specis that has ever inhabitied the earth without being able to reproduce is extinct.

I 100% agree with you on that

I 100% agree with you on that Ode, schools are having to do things like this because the parents don't or won't. I don't think anything other than academic related stuff should be done by the school. But I wouldn't protest against a class that was needed becuase the parents at home are lacking and making our schools and children unsafe. Provided its not singling out to be nice to one group... it should be anti violent period, towards gays, races, special ed, uglies, fats, shorts, reheads, poor, rich etc... just anti violence period against anyone you think is different than you or any other reason!

Gays Gays everywhere. Has

Gays Gays everywhere. Has anyone noticed how we are being flooded with gay images on TV. Its everywhere and on almost every TV show. Who is behind this? I teach my children to be the best that they can be. I teach them to never settle for less to be better than the person next to them. Homosexuality is degenerate. I have bred with a female of good European stock and our children are good looking, smart and gay free. Its in the genes. Breed it out.

Keep it simple stupid! Just

Keep it simple stupid! Just tell the kids not to call each other names, and to keep their hands to themselves. There is no need to spend millions of dollars on non-educational teachings. Kids today are fully aware of homosexuality. The parents decide how to raise their kids, not the government.

Should we teach gay sex with the birds and the bees in school. You know thats the next step. Is the anus an entrance or an exit? That is the question.

Let me inform you all from

Let me inform you all from the perspective of a lesbian and the parent of a gay son. Being gay is definitely not a choice. I fought who I was for thirty years because of fear of exactly what is being said here today. I finally had to come to terms with who I was to save my own life. Do you think any one choose to be discriminated against, threatened on a regular basis and looked at as an abomination. But I am what God made me and yes God did make me this way. And I have a right to be protected under the law just like every other American and citizen of South Carolina. I also want my son to be protected, because even though it is a double standard, he is more likely to experience violence as a gay man than I am as a lesbian. Would I have chosen for him to be gay, NO because I know what he is in for in today's world? But I also see that the generation coming up now is more tolerant and open minded than their parents and grandparent. This gives me hope, that one day all American will have chance to be themselves and protected under the laws of this great country. You all need to look around you and see what is really going on here, discrimination plan an simple.

leaving God out of this,

leaving God out of this, there would be no children without the opposite sex. Choice? maybe. Born that way? maybe. But I'm also born with the capabilites and at times the want to lie, steal, cheat, hate, murder, etc...etc....But I choose to overcome those feelings.

If homosexuals want a school

If homosexuals want a school that teaches their religious views then do what other organizations due. Start your own schools! This is why we have separation between church and state.

You can love whoever you

You can love whoever you want. I love my dad and I love my best friend. Love is just a feeling. A bond to protect and oversee someone close to you. The issue is that a human that has a compulsion to mate with someone of the same sex is defective.
And don't give me this jumbo that it's natural and even animals are gay. Mankinds future is to reach and surpass the stars. To do so he must get his biological house in order.
