Rush-hour traffic on Wheeler Road at Interstate 20 was backed up for nearly an hour this morning aftern a collision between two sport utility vehicles that sent one woman to the hospital.

The crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. when Demonsha Burns, 26, of Martinez, driving a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban north on Wheeler Road, hit the driver’s side door of a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Amy Orvin, 39, of Trenton, S.C., as Mrs. Orvin exited the I-20 westbound off-ramp to head south on Wheeler, said Columbia County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg Kernaghan.

Witnesses told Deputy Kernaghan that the collision spun and flipped the Trailblazer into the air, landing it on the passenger side in the center median with Mrs. Orvin trapped inside.

Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, but it took nearly 30 minutes for Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue and Gold Cross emergency workers to cut the roof from the vehicle to get Mrs. Orvin out.

Mrs. Orvin was taken to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital for treatment, Deputy Kernaghan said. Ms. Burns is charged with running a red light, he said.

I pray for a speedy recovery

I pray for a speedy recovery for the lady. Another moron not paying attention and running a red light. Been seeing it quite often lately, usually with cell phone in hand. And 2 of them were tractor trailers!!!!

That's a very bad

That's a very bad intersection in terms of people running the red light. I'll be glad when using a cell phone while driving is illegal AND enforced, even if that had nothing to do with this morning's wreck.

Amen to that Fiat. It was

Amen to that Fiat. It was bad enough when people were distracted by other things like radios and those were for brief seconds, then talking on the cell the whole time driving, now these idiots are texting while driving!!!!!! I saw this idiot the other day with a tag that said soapman for his back tag, he was swerving so bad and alsmost hit me driving 55 talking on cell with it on his shoulder so he can write down some info on a paper on his steering wheel rather than pull over for a minute. He almost caused 3 wrecks and did it stop him when people honked to get his attention, nope... he never even looked up!! Inconsiderate jerk is what he was. I'm sure my son sitting in the back seat was glad mom was defensive driving since this jerk doesnt care if he hurts a child or anyone else for that fact!!

Is her name really Demonsha?

Is her name really Demonsha? Maybe change it to Speed Demon instead. I'll be willing to bet, just by the name alone, that she WAS talking on a "cellar phone".

I saw the accident this

I saw the accident this morning just shortly after it happened. Fire and rescue were not on the scene yet but one policeman was. It's a miracle that the lady got out of the Trailblazer alive. It looked really bad.
