The crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. when Demonsha Burns, 26, of Martinez, driving a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban north on Wheeler Road, hit the driverâs side door of a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Amy Orvin, 39, of Trenton, S.C., as Mrs. Orvin exited the I-20 westbound off-ramp to head south on Wheeler, said Columbia County Sheriffâs Deputy Greg Kernaghan.
Witnesses told Deputy Kernaghan that the collision spun and flipped the Trailblazer into the air, landing it on the passenger side in the center median with Mrs. Orvin trapped inside.
Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, but it took nearly 30 minutes for Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue and Gold Cross emergency workers to cut the roof from the vehicle to get Mrs. Orvin out.
Mrs. Orvin was taken to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital for treatment, Deputy Kernaghan said. Ms. Burns is charged with running a red light, he said.
