An argument between a man and the mother of his child led to Friday's incident at Augusta Mall's parking lot in which several people were hit by a car.

Keith Lavelle Varner Jr., 19, is charged with four counts of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated assault family violence after police say he ran into the mother of his child, their six-month-old baby and four other people around 9 p.m. Friday night, said Richmond County Sheriff’s Sgt. Calvin Chew.

Mr. Varner began arguing with his child's mother, Reneshia Williams, outside the mall in front of the food court when he saw her walking out of the building with a group of friends.

Mr. Varner backed up his vehicle and then rammed into Ms. Williams, their child and the four friends. They were all transported to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics, Sgt. Chew said today. Ms. Williams and her infant were not injured, but the other four victims were treated and released from the hospital after suffering lacerations, bruises and possibly a broken hip.

Mr. Varner was arrested and remains in the Richmond County Jail without bond.
