The second annual Thunder Over Augusta event kicked off early Saturday afternoon, with a large crowd on hand at the Augusta Common to enjoy the activities and honor servicemen past and present.
As was the case with last year's inaugural celebration, the event features an array of entertainment and education options, topped off by a concert and a fireworks display.
The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps was the highlight of the opening ceremonies, which included the singing of The Star Spangled Banner, introductions of distinguished guests, and a flyover by a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft.
Events still to come include combat demonstrations, concerts, skydive team exhibitions and a car show.
The evening will be capped off by a downtown fireworks show over the Savannah River set to begin around 9:15 p.m.
