William Pierce “Bill” Copenhaver, a longtime Augusta civic and business leader, and father of Mayor Deke Copenhaver, died today at his home in Martinez.

“He was a wonderful man and we all loved him dearly,” the mayor said this afternoon. “He gave a tremendous amount back to the community and always served as a role model for me.

“My entire family will miss him and everyones’ thoughts and prayers during this difficult time are greatly appreciated.”

Mr. Copenhaver was an active community leader, taking a variety of roles with the Greater Augusta Chamber of Commerce, where he served on its board of directors and chaired the transportation committee. He was considered one of the driving forces behind the establishment of Fort Discovery.

As a business executive, Mr. Copenhaver held leadership roles with Columbia Nitrogen and Celanese Corp., where he was president of Canadian Celanese Corp., and a vice president of Chemcell Ltd., a joint venture between Celanese and ICI.

He was also a member of the Augusta National Golf Club.

In the past, he was also active in Boy Scout programs and served on the Methodist Church Board of Governors.

A Virginia native, Mr Copenhaver was a graduate of Virginia Tech.

He saw military service in Europe as a B-17 pilot for the U.S. Army during World War II. Earlier this year, that service prompted his son, the mayor, to make a donation in his name during a city commission meeting to help fund a presentation of the Tuskegee Airmen movie at the Imperial Theater.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Road.
