FLORENCE, Ala. -- An Augusta man who went to Alabama to visit family for Mother's Day, was fatally shot early Sunday, and another man is under arrest.

Joel Ricks, 27, of Augusta, formerly of Muscle Shoals, Ala., was shot multiple times in an apartment, police told the Florence Times Daily.

Jermaine Anwar Jefferson, 27, of Florence, is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center, charged with murder.

"At this point, we have no evidence to indicate that this was anything other than a domestic situation," police detective Capt. Randy England told the newspaper.

Detectives said Mr. Ricks was at the Graham Avenue residence visiting a woman who lived in the apartment where the shooting occurred. Authorities said Mr. Ricks had known the woman before he moved to Georgia.

Along with the suspect, the NRA and Congress should take the blame for the fact that this Augusta man will be coming home in a casket. Congress is too afraid to stand up to the NRA and protect us from gun violence.

willistontownsc, please use your brain and think through your message before you submit the message. Banning the sale of firearms will not end murder and mayehm on our streets. Take a few minutes and perform research on similar actions in two other countries, the United Kingdom and Australia. A short drop in murders were noted after the banning of firearms; however, murders and other serious injury numbers went up after criminal armed themselves with knives. Currently, the UK is looking at how to stop this new problem. I'm unsure if banning knives can be effectively enforced. Mean people are everywhere. There's always a knife, lead pipe, gun, or other weapon close at hand.

williston-- Guns don't kill,

williston-- Guns don't kill, it's the trigger man/woman that does the killing! If they didn't have a gun they would find another weapon. Everyone should have their home protected with a gun and know how to use it. Guess you don't own one, and that's fine with me but I feel no one has the right to tell me I can't have one or two or three. SusieQ

All you anti-gun people, put a sign up outside of your house that says :"There are no guns in this house" it would make decision making so much easier for the bad-guys.
