The ball whizzed off the bat and sailed toward Evans shortstop Kevin Caughman, who realized he had a decision to make. He could either stab it out of the air for another Dutchtown out or let it drop on the dirt and begin a double play.

Caughman let the ball fizzle into the ground and snapped a throw to second base to start a 6-4-3 double play, barely pausing to glance at the bag, which was covered by second baseman Jeff Rice.

"I talked to him after the play. He thought exactly what I was thinking," Caughman said of the nice defensive moment in the Knights' playoff victory over Dutchtown.

That happens frequently for the two seniors, whose steadiness in the field is a big reason Evans has won 13 games in a row heading into the second round of the Georgia High School Association Class AAAA state baseball playoffs. Evans, which will play host to Glynn Academy today in a 4 p.m. doubleheader, is one of four area teams at home Wednesday.
