Drive gets more than 74,000 pounds of food

Residents left more goodies by their mailbox than last year Saturday for the Stamp Out Hunger Drive .

Golden Harvest Food Bank officials were still counting Satur­day night, but at least 74,325 pounds of food were collected, up from 72,012 last year, said Carrie Jones, the food drive ’ s coordinator.

“The need is definitely greater than it was last year ,” she said.

Area mail carriers collected non perishable foods at residential mailboxes Saturday. Items including canned soup, canned vegetables, rice and cereal were also gathered at more than 25 post offices, Ms. Jones said.
